freestyle dining on the gem.....

You don’t have to reserve.

However, in the speciality restaurants you may find that you can’t get in when you want (or sometimes even at all).

In the MDRs, the worst case is that you may have to wait for a while. That depends on the time, but most people don’t make reservations for them.

Reservations open up 120 days out (130 if you are in a suite). If you plan in eating in the speciality restaurants then it is best to make reservations, especially if specific times are important to you.

with freestyle dining, do you just show up at anytime for dinner or do you have to register before hand?

Specialty dining: reservations are required. You can start making reservations 120 days prior to cruise. Prime time dining will sell out. The most popular restaurants are Teppanyaki and Cagney's.

Main Dining Rooms: MDRs take reservations if you want to minimize your wait time. Otherwise, show up when you are hungry and you will be seated quickly.

So what happens with your reservation if you don't show? Do you get charged (if it's a specialty restaurant?)

Officially yes, but as most places are a la carte there is no cover charge anyway. I haven’t heard of people being charged for ones with fixed cover charges, but per the T&Cs it could happen.

The T&Cs also state that you can cancel with 24 hours notice (I think it is 24 hours anyway). We have changed and cancelled bookings with no problem. We would always let them know, regardless of what the T&Cs say.
