Why would being on one side make it special?

IT depends where you are sailing to.if you're doing the transatlantic the port side is better for the sun so it does matter which side you're on

Starboard is thought to have derived from "Steering Board" and Portside from the side the steering board did not stick out from (for obvious reasons), including up here where the best ships used to be made.

In particular this comment:

It seems to me that the main cause of upset is the offer to "put a note on the booking" for a port side cabin which may have given some false hope of actually getting one.

Anyway I hope that the OP can put this behind them and has a great cruise.
