Larainerenee Posted October 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2018 Advance planning for next September... Our cruise disembarks in Monte Carlo and we've never been there. Is is reasonable to consider staying somewhere there for a night before going to Nice for our flight home? Is there enough to see for a day? Or, should we transfer to Nice and explore that before departing the next day? What is the distance between the 2? And, best way to transfer. We'll have luggage, so i don't think a train works for us.
marazul Posted October 4, 2018 #2 Share Posted October 4, 2018 Stay in Nice. There is more to see, more hotels and more restaurants. The easiest way is to take a taxi from the port. It is about a 30-40 minute drive. An alternative is to book transportation with someone like https://www.friend-in-france.com/ You can arrange for a tour of Monte Carlo followed by transportation to your hotel in Nice. lamchops Posted October 5, 2018 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2018 I would spend the night in Nice. You can use cab, bus, or train to get there. I have stayed at one of the many Bestwestern (Alba) hotels near the train station. The hotel Alba is just around the corner from the airport bus which picks up at Gare Nice ville. From there it’s a short walk to old town, and the beach area sites.
GrJ Berkshire Posted October 6, 2018 #5 Share Posted October 6, 2018 Disagree, we enjoy the old town of Monte Carlo, the palace, oceanography museum, jardin exotique, and the area around the casino, definitely worth staying in Monaco. Nice is good as well but don't overlook Monaco and if you are a motorsport fan then the chance to see and travel on the grand prix circuit is a must do. Monaco buses are easy to use cheap and simple to follow, why not see where so many multi-millionaires live and dream !!
John Bull Posted October 7, 2018 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2018 Subject only to hotel prices, I agree with Gr J - plenty to see and enjoy in Monte Carlo. And unless you don't fancy the uphill slog to the palace, oceanography museum. etc, no need for wheels. Current score...... Monte Carlo 2 - 2 Nice JB :)

Monte Carlo 2 - 2 Nice JB :) I also vote for Monaco as being more interesting and more scenic than Nice. If you want to avoid JB’s mentioned uphill slog, read Toms Port Guides here https://www.tomsportguides.com/uploads/5/8/5/4/58547429/monaco-06-20-2012.pdf which tell you how to use the car park elevators to get up to the top. Rare Hlitner Posted October 7, 2018 #8 Share Posted October 7, 2018 Oh "heck" (have to be PC) lets jump in this scoring system :). We vote Monte Carlo 2...Nice 10! In fact, when we are driving up to France from Italy and get to Monte Carlo we make sure to bypass the city. As to Nice, we are big fans. You have the wonderful Flower Market (6 days a week), many decent restaurants, several excellent museums, the Promanade, Old Town, etc. As to MC, we find that place just to sterile for our taste although the Palace and Oceanographic Museum are worthy of a visit. Would we pay 34€ a couple to go into the Casino :). No way. Visiting at night to gamble is an experience (when most of the patrons are not cruise ship passengers or on day tours)....but we would prefer being in Nice slurping at Soupe de Poisson or even Bouillabaisse. marazul Posted October 8, 2018 #9 Share Posted October 8, 2018 OK. Monte Carlo 5 - 14 Nice. BTW, on Mondays the Nice Flower Market still has flowers plus a great flea market with lots of silver, jewelry and knickknacks.
