Cost of travel insurance for Caribbean cruises.

Hi I have or existing conditions. Cystic fibrosis, 5 years post double lung transplant, 3 years post thyroid cancer & removal of my thyroid & insulin diabetic.  I am well though despite what I have.

I have tried 4 places so far they are all over £1200.  I was I was in Florida in may 2018 for two weeks & it was only £120 for both my husband & I.   I asked why it was so much & she said it could be more people have claimed on their insurance than people who went to Florida.  I am wondering if it has anything to do with all the bad weather they’ve had in the Caribbean.

Thanks for any info.

Age can also be a major factor, moving into a higher threshold, eg 59 to 60 can affect premiums. Have you tried a specialist insurer? I am not sure the weather has anything to do with it, we are recently back from the Caribbean and we had great weather. You are clearly high risk and 4 different insurers giving you quotes over £1200 tells a story.

Sorry I have not been able to come online for a week or so as had my 2nd cataracts removed.

Thank you both for your replies

The Juggler I have never had to claim on my insurance before for any of my 'health problems'   yes it would cost a lot to airlift to the mainland I know.  I'm not sure how much florida would be this year, but it is normally around that price when I go.

I am 56, the ones I have tried were for pre existing conditions, I am assuming it will be my lung transplant that is causing the high quote.  Just wondered if the Caribbean is generally more expensive than the mainland.

Thanks again guys

Do you need to be covered for those pre-existing conditions?

My G/F had treatment for cancer. She has been clear for two years, but a standard travel policy is still ridiculously expensive.

And with that type of cancer, a problem won't suddenly arise. So she's switched to another insurer, at sensible cost but excluding that pre-existing condition - a condition that's not going to show either during the vacation or between booking and vacation.

The only precaution that we have to take is to time our vacations between 6-monthly check-ups.

hi  we found that the specialist insurers were very expensive, we found "standard" insurers would cover our pre-existing conditions for significantly less that those advertised as for people with medical conditions

Another option is to go to a broker, a good broker will not charge for providing no-obligation quotes, we have had some good deals via a local broker
