Fying out of MIA this weekend - beware TSA closure

Miami International Airport will close a terminal early for three days because of a shortage of Transportation Security Administration screeners, airport spokesman Greg Chin said Thursday.

The security checkpoints in terminal G will be closed after 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, he said. Terminal G is one of six terminals in the airport.

"Due to an increased number of TSA screeners not reporting to work, we have decided to take this precautionary step and relocate about 12 flights to adjoining concourses in the afternoons," he said.

Chin told the Miami Herald that federal screeners are calling in sick at double the normal rate for Miami, and TSA managers aren't confident they will have enough workers to operate all 11 checkpoints throughout the airport at normal hours.

"We felt we had to make a decision before the weekend," Chin told the newspaper. "They're erring on the side of caution

Sadly I think this is going to happen at other airports as well as time passes.

I know this was happening at Baltimore Washington Airport within days of the shutdown (my daughter and her husband had this happen to them on December 22). It just wasn't announced ahead of time.

I feel so bad about this! I think a domino effect will happen soon😞. Not a big air port but also Palm Springs also will be closing down. It was on our news a day ago.

One sad note about this is that some of the folks calling in sick may actually BE sick.  The flu is on an uptick. Hope the ones that are truly sick go to the doctor and get a note, because there will no doubt be retribution

I feel sorry for the workers who are pawns in this whole thing.

 

Those cruisers who wanted to book those flights which got them out of MIA as quickly as possible after getting off their ships had better have multiple flight options in hand.  But, I wonder if they will be re-accomodated on other flights without paying - this isn't the airlines' fault (like a mechanical)...
