chuckles60 Posted July 10, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 10, 2019 When in Skagway which do you prefer and why: White pass rail &Klondike Hwy or White pass scenic railway?
Paul Bradley Posted July 10, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 10, 2019 Can't comment on the Rail/Hwy excursion, but we did the rail both ways. It is spectacular, but my interest started to flag a bit halfway back. Perhaps the view from the road is sufficiently different to keep one's interest all the way? Rare misguy Posted July 10, 2019 #3 Share Posted July 10, 2019 We drove both times we have gone to Skagway and love the drive and the sights. It is also usually much less expensive than the train for two people.
xlxo Posted July 11, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 11, 2019 I vote rail and hwy combo... you get to see BOTH sides of the canyon. The highway is on the West side of the canyon, while the railway is on the East side.
Rare karatemom2 Posted July 11, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 11, 2019 We have done train only, train/hwy combo and rented a car and done the road only and each time it was wonderful. I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would be the train/hwy combo because you get both perspectives but I have to say the time we did the drive on our own was fantastic because we stopped for as long as we chose many places along the way and that was truly a great luxury to control our own time. But on the other hand, the last trip we did train only all the way to Lake Bennett and although it was a long trip I loved it. Lake Bennett is so amazing and the history that remains there is like visiting an archaeological dig. So I guess my advice is go to Alaska multiple times and try them all! Cheryl H Posted July 11, 2019 #6 Share Posted July 11, 2019 We did the train/bus combo.....and while I enjoyed the scenery, I was glad to be on the short train ride.
