New Trenitalia Train + Bus to Pompei Ruins

There is a new service from Trenitalia that started on 13 July, 2019, that offers a bus to and from the ruins (Porta Marina main entrance) and the Pompei Trenitalia station. The fare for this combined service is 4,10 euro (vs. 2,80 for the train alone). You can't buy a ticket just for the bus or get on the bus without a ticket, it can only be purchased in combination with a Trenitalia ticket to or from Pompei.

I'm not sure if this is much of an improvement for cruise visitors but it's good to know it's an option.  I still think the SITA bus is the best public transit alternative from the cruise port to the ruins at Pompei because it's one leg, it drops you off very close to the main entrance (where you can join a guided tour if you want) and the depot in Naples is walking distance from the cruise port.

However, if you want to use this new Trenitalia service, following is how to do it.  There's no need or benefit to purchasing these tickets in advance, just get it at the station.

The first step is to get to Napoli Centrale, the closest public transit option is the #151 bus from the street in front of the cruise port, the fastest is the #1 metro line from the Municipio station about two blocks from the port.

Once at the train station, to get the train plus bus ticket, use Napoli Piazza Garibaldi as your departure station and Pompei Scavi as your arrival station.

There are buses from the train station to the ruins at 8:45 (you must be on the 7:57 train from Naples to make this connection), 9:45 (8:57 train from Naples), 10:45 (9:57 train from Naples), 11:17 (10:27 trian from Naples) and 12:15 (11:27 train from Naples).

There are buses from the ruins back to the train station at 8:20, 9:20, 10:20, 11:00, 11:55, 15:20, 16:50, and 17:50.

The benefits of this option, vs. the Circumvesuviana, include:

• the trains are larger and more comfortable
• the train portion takes the same amount of time (38 minutes) but with fewer stops (7 vs. 19)

The downsides include:

• it's more expensive (1,30 euro more for the bus)
• it takes more total time
• there are only a few runs each day, vs. about twice an hour on the Circumvesuviana

Interesting news. 

 

It seems to me that this would also be very useful for anyone contemplating a daytrip from Rome to see Pompeii. You could take one of the fast trains from Rome, then get the Trenitalia option + bus to Pompei Scavi instead of the Circumvesuviana.

No, it's not.

 

The Trenitalia station closest to Herculeneum, Portici-Ercolano, is one mile from the ruins on foot, while the Circumvesuviana station (Ercolano Scavi) is less than a half mile.

Last time we were in Naples there was a bus at the port selling return to Pompeii for iirc a reasonable amount.    We are hoping to do this and not worry about getting to the train station, but this is good info to have in case it is no longer operational.  Thanks.

You're probably thinking of the City Sightseeing shuttle:  https://www.city-sightseeing.it/en/shuttle-bus-naples-pompeii/

 

It's more expensive than public transit and much less flexible, but it is easy.
