Just Back From The Dawn 1/22 to 2/2- Pros & Cons

Dolphins

Recommended Posts

We just returned from our 4th cruise on Norwegian Dawn. Some Pros and Cons:

PROS-

Dawn staff as friendly and helpful as always.

Spectacular new trio "Best of Friends" now performing in the atrium and bringing many dancers out on the terrazzo in front of the reception desk.

Unusually good winter cruising weather with smooth seas and sunny skies almost every day of our cruise.

Nassau a pleasant alternative to Great Stirrup Cay.

CONS-

Same old "Bollywood" and "South Beach Rave" again in the Stardust Theatre.

No more Rack of Lamb on the menu.

No-fee fitness classes by Steiner too few and far between.

Surprising number of school age children on board for an 11 day cruise in late January???

Will post a detailed review on Cruisecritic soon.

I think it was Regents week in NY last week (when you went) so lots of kids had off if they didn't have to take the tests.

If I'm not mistaken, Regents week applies to only high school students. Saw none of them. These were elementary school students who probably missed 9 days of school between their Christmas holiday week and the upcoming President's holiday week?

Can't wait for your review. We will be leaving March 26th. Can you also let me know what time you docked. Our documents show 10am but the port is showing 8am. Also do you have any dailies you can post?

We were scheduled to arrive in New York at 10AM but due to the unusually calm seas and what the Captain described as a "nice push from the Gulf Stream," we docked at 8:30AM and debarkation started about 10AM. Don't have any dailies I can post but would happy to answer any questions.

The reason we skipped Great Stirrup Cay was a recent storm had damaged much of the beach there and the Captain opted for Nassau and advised us so the day before. We had a great day, albeit short, at the beach on Paradise Island. Unlike cozumel, where the recent hurricane washed all the sand from many of the beaches leaving only rocky coral.

Hi Boyledon,

If you are interested, we have a thread on our cruise in the roll call section.

Can't wait to go!

What's a 'surprising' number of kids? Aproximately how many?

I would say there were about 50 elementary school age kids on board which is really unusual for an 11 day cruise in late January considering they just had a week off before New Years and they will be getting another week off later this month? To go on this cruise, they had to miss 9 school days? Never saw that many on such a long cruise in late January?

At least that many! I expect we'll have a goodly number as well, the following sailing. Lots of schools on vacation during those two sailings.

I love to watch the little ones when they go on parade with the "Kids Crew". Cute, cute, cute! :D

Who is the current Cruise Director?

Linda was the CD when our cruise began but she left the ship at one of our final ports and was replaced by a new CD named Lance who was on board for the final days of the cruise. Never sailed with either before.

Why was Linda replaced? Is there any reason, I was not triled with her, but I am sure it is not the reason:) Is it common to do it in the middle of sailing?

I believe she had been scheduled to leave and probably left during the cruise to make a more convenient flight connection. She had a tough act to follow with Colin and Paul Baya who preceeded her but I thought she tried hard and she could hardly have benefited by the obvious comparisons.

Did you notice a change in the quality of the food? Other than the no rack of lamb, did you notice other changes? I know food is very subjective, but did it taste just as good this time as it did the other times you've sailed?

After three cruises on the Dawn, we did notice a lack of variety in the main restaurant dinner menus from what we had previously experienced. The quality of the food remained high but there seemed to be less choices throughout the cruise. We were especially disappointed in La Trattoria where the Pizza to Order and the Fruit de Mare were not up to the former standards we had previously enjoyed. The food and service in Cagney's remained excellent and we continue to appreciate the ambiance and offerings in Salsa. The Garden Cafe buffet has not changed discernibly, nor has the Blue Lagoon. We often enjoyed breakfast and lunch in Venetian. We did miss the half-price nights in the specialty restaurants which surprised many passengers on the first night.
