Rare Hlitner Posted October 3, 2020 #2 Share Posted October 3, 2020 WOW! Guess I should resist the obvious "it's about time" comment :). It has taken so long to build that darn system of barriers that some of the early builds became inoperative years before other necessary barriers with constructed. I cannot help but wonder it was sheer luck that the barrier system actually functioned :). Folks need to understand that this flood control project has become a joke within Italy so I assume many Italians are celebrating with a few bottles of good Italian wine :). I suspect that within Italy there is a lot of skepticism that the barriers will work a 2nd time....but we can all hope. Hank
Langoustine Posted October 4, 2020 #3 Share Posted October 4, 2020 Having been to Venice several times, I am astonished that it worked.
John Bull Posted October 5, 2020 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2020 Certainly construction had its problems. A major one was the amount of sediment in the lagoon, which clogged the mechanisms and closures. So yes, a degree of surprise that it worked the first time that it was needed. Doesn't mean that it'll still work next year, so fingers-crossed. But better than relying on King Canute JB
Rare cruisemom42 Posted October 9, 2020 #5 Share Posted October 9, 2020 Come on now -- a bit harsh. After all, the Italians were once known for their engineering skills -- paved roads, aqueducts and indoor plumbing, the amphitheatre, anyone?
