Recommendation for a day in Genoa?

Hello,

 

We are in Genoa for one day during our cruise on the Regal Princess at the end of September and it's the only port for which I have no plan (yet). We prefer small group private tours to ship excursions, and have spent time during a previous trip in Florence, Rome and Venice. Does anyone have a recommendation for the day? We are there from 7am-9pm and are open to DIY or a semi-private shore excursion. 

 

Any suggestions much appreciated.

That's a nice long day although in late September it will be dark by 8 PM.

 

Portofino is a popular day trip from Genoa.   The ferries run through October so you should be able to travel easily, weather permitting.

 

Further afield you could take the train to Cinque Terre.  The Genop Piazza Principe station is walking distance from the cruise port and it takes a little under an hour and a half to get to Monterosso, the northernmost of the five villages.  It's easy to travel between the villages by local train.

Is the ferry normally crowded?  Are you able to get it from Genoa directly to Portofino?  Does it go along the coastline or are you further out in the water?

We really enjoyed Genoa, lots to see and explore and the best focaccia ever.
