Yes, but it is still polite to fake covering your mouth when having a fake cough.

We generally believe buffet areas are gross, with hundreds of people breathing on food and touching the utensils.  This is one reason we like to cruise with Oceania.  Passengers don't serve themselves at the buffet; staff ladle/serve the food onto our plates.  I wish all cruise lines did this.

I’ve been doing this for many years, well before COVID. 
I still instinctively cough into my elbow, even when wearing a mask. 
 

Coughing into a hand is disgusting, but I suppose it’s potentially better than not covering at all.
