Herculaneum from the port of Naples

I think I have figured it out, but would love for someone who has been there recently to verify. In 2019, I saw construction at the port of what I thought was to be a train station.  It is a tram.  So, can I take this tram to Napoli Porta Nolana to get the train to Herculaneum?  Here is what Rome2Rio indicated.

I can't see your image, but there has always been a tram you could catch just outside the Molo Beverello port which runs along the large street (Via Nuova Marina) that follows the water. It will eventually turn left onto the street where the Porta Nolana station is located. You can alight there and catch the train to either Herculaneum (Ercolano) or Pompeii (Pompei Scavi).

There are two tram lines that start/end at the stop across from the cruise port, you want line #1.  The other one, line #4, doesn't make the left turn on Corso Garibaldi.

This is the official info on the tram line:  ANM Web Site - Tram Linea 1

As you'll see, it's not very helpful.  The moovit app has a map that may make it easier to understand:  Linea 1: orari, fermate e mappe - Poggioreale (Aggiornato) (moovitapp.com)

As you look at the map, you'd be getting on at the bottom and staying on for six stops, to the first stop after making the left turn.

The construction you saw continues, they are building a new metro line and expanding the Municipio station to link the two lines.

When you get to Porta Nolana you can take one of two trains, whichever one leaves first, the train to Sorrento or the train to Poggiomarino.  They both stop at Ercolano Scavi, the stop for the ruins.

The same thing works on the way back, any train heading north that stops at Ercolano Scavi is going to Naples.

Another map that's not particularly easy to follow unless you know the area, but here it is showing the two lines that stop at Ercolano Scavi: EAV treni_mappa web_0.pdf (eavsrl.it)

One ticket will cover both the tram and the train, but at the cruise port you may not be able to get it, if you can't you'll need two tickets.

You buy them at newsstands or tabacchi shops, there's one at the tram stop and there used to be a newsstand in the cruise terminal.

If you can get the one ticket it's the NA2 Integrato and it costs euro 2,90.  This ticket is good for multiple segments and is good for 120 minutes, far more than you need for this trip.

If you can't get that, buy one local Naples ticket, UNA (UnicoNapoli) Aziendale for 1,20 euro.  This is the ticket for the tram, and don't forget to stamp it in the machine when you get on the tram.

Then, at the Porta Nolana station, you can buy the train ticket.  For this you need the NA2 Aziendate, which costs euro 2,40.

If you wind up buying a ticket at Porta Nolana, buy your return at the same time but get the Integrato ticket so you won't need a separate ticket for the tram on the return.

Thank you. That's very helpful. Does the Integrato ticket also need to be stamped on the tram?

Yes, it does need to be stamped.

The only difference in the tickets (they look the same) is that an Aziendale (Company) ticket is for use for one segment of a trip (and therefore with only one transit company), while the Integrato (Integrated) allows multiple segments with different transit suppliers.

It's a complicated set up but intended to make things easier for the commuter.  The system covers all mass transit within the region of Campania, a consortium of fourteen different transit companies that all agree to use the same ticketing system.  Once you understand the system it all makes sense but for the one time or casual user it seems complicated.

This is what we plan to do. How does one go about buying tickets for the tram and train?

Do check and see if the newspaper stand at the cruise terminal is selling the tickets. When we were there early July the Tabacchi in front of the Tram station was not selling tickets- I'm not sure if they were just out of tickets that day or not selling tickets at all, but we could not find another tabacchi near by. There was also a taxi strike that day so it took us a while to figure out how to get to Porto Nolana. Once we did, the tram and train ride were straightforward. I also used google maps on the tram with Porto Nolana as the end point to make sure we did not miss the stop.
