Will be in Maui and want to eat at Mama’s Fish House.  We will be sailing on the Pride Of America.  Cruise ship leaves at 6PM..i can get a reservation at 2:30PM.  How far away from the cruise terminal is Mama’s Fish House?  Please advise.

Keep in mind if you are not driving yourself, getting an Uber/taxi from Mama's will not be super easy/efficient-- make sure to pre arrange someone to pick you up if you aren't using your own rental car. Getting a car from the port to Mama's shouldn't be a big deal.

We will have rental vehicles but was planning to return them before going to Mama’s. That way we can straight to the ship from Mama’s.  Whatta you think??

When you order dessert, ask Mama's to call a cab for you. That should be a small ask for someone spending $300 on lunch.

Strictly FYI, on your return to the ship from Mama's, remember that it will be late afternoon on a work day (Monday).  Going through Paia and then Kahului (from restaurant to harbor) can give you a fair amount of slow traffic around then.  If your cab isn't allowed to drop you at the ship and you have to walk from the pedestrian entrance at Wharf Street and Hana Highway, that will be about a 10 minute walk to the ship.

Is Mama’s really worth the trouble??  Just asking….

There are better options on the island in terms food but for what you are describing, a late lunch before you sail from Kahului, its not a bad option given the proximity to the pier. It's only about 15 minutes without traffic.

Is the food a little overhyped? Yeah. It was better 10-15 years ago. It's not a bad experience though and worth at least 1 visit. Its sort of the Maui equivalent of going to New York City and eating at Tavern on the Green but with maybe slightly better food.

But as said above, you will hit some traffic coming back to the ship with everyone who set out for Hana coming back through around that hour. Also arrange for a taxi ahead of time or let them know you would like one about halfway through your meal. You are in a more remote area that taxis/ubers don't usually hang out in so that could be slow. Just build some cushion time in getting back to the ship.

It depends on what someone calls "trouble". Mama's is a lovely setting, the food is well prepared and meals there are enjoyable. It is often our last meal on Maui.

But it is very expensive and I wouldn't drive from Wailea or West Maui to go to it during our stay unless it was to or from another activity (Haleakala, airport, etc).
