When I was fiercely loyal to Carnival about a decade or so ago, I was very active in John Heald's social media forum.  I couldn't believe how many people made up excuses why not to tip at all.  Fortunately, not so much of that in here!

Getting a little ugly in here. I will just kind of say what was said earlier. I will not tip extra when I cruise now. The reason why is tips have been set for me. In the old days those that showed real initiative got WAY more from me than those people do now. My feelings on auto gratuities are mixed. You still have many that go above what is expected. And those people get screwed by those that dont. I will say once auto tips were created I feared service would completely collapse. It hasnt. But there are definitely those that do not work as hard as others and just skirt by. Those people make the same from me as those that bust their butts. Because of the system. You decide if that is fair or not. Live and die by the system I guess.

Precisely why I tip a little extra above and beyond the 18% on the bar bill for above and beyond service and at the MDR or Windjammer table.  They remember me and my party and provide, USUALLY, very very good service from that point on.  Those that don't provide the above and beyond service get squat, extra.

Quick story:  On my last cruise on the Ovation, the first evening of the cruise I went to the Casino bar.  Ordered a Screwdriver, gave the bartender my card, she returned it, and thanked me by my first name.  I left her a $2.00 tip and from there on when she saw me, even if I was just walking by the bar she always yelled (at a reasonable level), "HELLO JAY".  Whenever I went up to the bar, she was immediately there and asked if I wanted another Screwdriver.  She was amazing, she always got a $2.00 extra tip and the night before debarkation, I walked by the bar and gave her a $10.00 bill, for nothing.  She almost cried.  She probably earned an extra $30.00 to $40.00 that cruise just from me.  BTW, I try to get and carry up to $200.00 in 2 dollar bills just for tipping ship's crew a little at at time.
