Civitecchia Train to Rome

You buy the tickets at the train station.

The options to get there are discussed here frequently, usually in reverse, as in getting from the train station to the ship. Taxi, if available (there are restrictions on taxis in the port), would be the most direct, but taxis may not want to take the short fare.

More likely you need to take the free port shuttle to the outside dropoff, then either walk, or take the bus that goes direct to the train station. The fare was 2 euros, I think.

Buy your return tickets at the station.

There's often a long line at the ticket office but you can avoid this by buying tickets at the newsstand  - perfectly legit.

Once in the station be sure to validate your tickets in a machine - there are no validation machines on the trains.

The end-station is Roma Termini, but if you plan your day ahead you can choose to get off at Roma San Pietro - a 15 min walk from St Peter's Square / Vatican.

Or  do what we did ............

Buy your Colosseum tickets (they're actually three-site tickets, Colosseum, Palatine Hill & Forum) in advance on-line.

Your train ticket is good for travel on Rome's metro and service buses (not ho-ho buses)

For the Colosseum get off the train at Roma Ostiense, then walk thro to  the conjoined metro station of Piramida to take a blue line train in the direction of Conca D-Ora or Rebibbia.

Get off at the second stop, Colosseo.

With tickets in hand you can walk past the ticket line at the Colosseum, but there will be a security line.

After the Colosseum walk thro the Forum, past Vittorio Emanuele II Monument (aka "the Wedding Cake") and on to ( Trevi Fountain only if you have time), the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, then 20 minute walk or bus or taxi hop to St Peter's Square, then San Pietro station for the train back to Civi.

Train will be packed, but everyone will get on.

Carry return train times with you, plan to return on the second - (or third) -to-last train that suits your back-on-board time.

My info over 5 years out-of-date - double-check elsewhere and if anyone sees anything that's no longer accurate please post.

You can purchase straight train tickets on the regionale train, which are euro 4,60 each way.  There is no discount for round trip, they simply sell you two one-way tickets.

There is also a ticket called the BIRG, which is good for round trip train fare as well as use of public transit in Rome through the day (metro, bus, trams).  This ticket can only be purchased at the newstand as it is not sold by Trenitalia but by ATAC.  The 5-zone BIRG ticket (required for Civitavecchia-Rome) costs 12 euro.  Info here:  BIRG (atac.roma.it)
