Best place to stay n Charleston

Will be cruising next January and looking for a nice place to stay for a couple days before cruise.
Somewhere close to port would be great Will be driving in from Va

If by “nice” you mean a good place, right in the old city with parking, and just a few blocks from the cruise terminal, think about the Indigo Inn;  if you mean inexpensive, check out the motels outside of the city.

Thanks.  We are thinking near cruise port which I guess is old city

We stayed at the Kings Courtyard Inn   but  I do not think they have long term parking  but you can park at the port 

We were not on a cruise but the hotel is  great area & walking  distance to many restaurants etc

If needed they have long term parking and shuttle to cruise port - 

Think ask for cruise and park package or something like that

We plan to stay at the Sleep Inn Mt. Pleasant the night before the cruise (free parking for the night we are there) and park at the port. It's actually a cheaper option than most of the sleep and park deals, and will be more convenient on disembarkation day,

"Best", without knowing your specific budget, I would say would be the Wentworth Mansion, Planters Inn (only if you plan on eating at their Peninsula restaurant), or Charleston Place. Wentworth would be my personal favorite of the three-- great atmosphere and attention to detail.
