It's also a down grade because this is 8B category and I was 8C but that phone rep earlier today insisted that I can absolutely, no way in hell, not in this universe ever down grade a cabin and that I can only upgrade lol.

I'm quoting my own post above because I only just realized now like an idiot while looking at both confirmation printouts that I actually did upgrade and not downgrade with the change made lol. (unless i'm reading the letters wrong)

The cabin 8255 that I originally had booked was an 8C category, and the 6473 cabin (that the phone rep refused to give me) in the Upper deck was an 8A category, so that's actually an upgrade too but I was told by the phone rep it was a downgrade. Why? Does upgrade/downgrade go by decks or by the sequence of category letters?

And the 7439 I eventually got now is 8B so isn't that an upgrade from 8C? I'm just confused now why the phone rep kept calling the move to 8A a downgrade when it apparently wasn't according to the letters?

8C is a higher category than 8B and 8A is the cheapest category in the balcony cabins. So if you started with an 8C and now have an 8A than you have indeed downgraded. 🙂

On Carnival, A is lowest category letter, followed by B.

Thank you for clarifying it for me. It's confusing because I would think since A comes before C, A would mean an upgrade because it's before C. So in actuality as the letters advance, you're going up and not down. Maybe i'm confusing letters with numbers lol. But I got it now. Thanks.

That goes against everything I learned in grade school lol. If Carnival were a school and gave a test, an A would be failing and an F would pass with flying colors I guess. 😂

Just for comparison:

Disney has the A stateroom being the upgrade/ higher category.

BUT the lowest number is upgrrade. Cat 10 and 11 are interior and 4-7 are balcony, with the lower number the more deluxe.

So I guess while carnival falls reading, Disney fails math.

I like Disney's category listing better that way. With A being high upgrade and as the letters progress it gradually downgrades. It's so easy to understand that way imo because A is first and Z is last.

I like doing the same with numbers too with the 1 being best and it gradually downgrades with subsequent numbers. I think Carnival's system is completely backwards. :classic_wacko:

When looking on paper one would think 8A or 8B would be better the better cabin than 8C. Oh well, i'm glad I finally know how it works after all these years!

It's not been that way since I started cruising in 1985. You'll get used to it. 😀

I changed cabins (Pride, June 30). The PVP originally told me they couldn't do it, but I booked on a Casino Rate and they sent me to a casino PVP. I had already paid for both my rooms in full, even though the pay by date wasn't for a month or so.

That was quick and easy with the casino PVP. They upgraded our room from hidden window interior to balcony for what the difference was. They had to find a booking code to match, which was the only challenge. It was like $350 to upgrade from hidden window interior to balcony.

HOWEVER, like a week after upgrading and paying in full the difference, I got an upgrade offer from Carnival. My second room was also hidden-window balcony and I was able to upgrade it for just $90 to balcony so we'd have side by side staterooms. Maybe if I'd have been patient, I'd have gotten a cheaper upgrade.

I have since received an additional upgrade offer. $40 to go from deck 4 to deck 8 balcony, $260 to go from regular balcony to extended balcony, or a strange $640 to upgrade to obstructed view balcony. I'm waiting for the suite if we're going to upgrade further, which I'm confident won't happen.

Unless it's a suite, I too will refuse any upgrade offers that may come because I really want to try this particular cabin with the long balcony. And unless it's a suite, I don't want to stay mid ship again. The area may be considered a plus and an upgrade for most, but it's a big negative for me with all the foot traffic.

BTW what is a "hidden window" interior and balcony? I'm picturing a solid wall where you push a button and then a window appears. I'm sure that can't be what it is lol.

Its listed as an interior, but it has a window that basically lets light in, but you can't see anything but another part of the ship, typically a lifeboat or a wall of some sort. I would book interiors if it weren't for the lack of light coming in. I don't spend much time in the room other than to sleep and shower, but I abhor sleeping in absolute darkness.

I did a search of "Carnival hidden window" and found pictures of it. For the price of an interior, i'd love to stay in a cabin like this one below....but the balconies have spoiled me so much that I just can't go back to anything less at this point lol.
