curly4dana Posted April 12, 2023 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2023 We are leaving on the Odyssey od the Seas on April 22, for the two week transatlantic cruise. I have never sailed across the Atlantic and I’m wondering what to expect weather-wise when I’m outside on the ship? Do I pack springtime lighter clothing, or warmer jeans and light jacket? I’m already straight with what to wear inside the ship, but I’ve always cruises to the Caribbean and never transatlantic. Any feedback will be so great! I’m trying not to overpack for the first time in my life because we will also be traveling Italy for a week after we disembark in Rome. Thanks in advance!!! topnole Posted April 12, 2023 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2023 Both. You will likely have some warm and cool weather. Good chance you’ll have some rain at points in time. Bringing a weatherproof type of jacket isn’t a bad idea. So maybe a light one and layer underneath if it is cold and needed. Layering is the way to go to pack light and then if it is warm you can just wear the individual items. We did the Symphony TA last month and it was cool most of the time with a few warm days in the middle. We had a lot of motion. I’d say 12-15 foot seas were common most of the cruise until we got to the straight and the Med. One day I’m sure it was 20+. But Symphony handled it well and it never bothered us a bit other than it impacted some shows. I will say I’ve never hear a cabin make so much noise. All the creaking and movement would’ve felt scary in an old ship. Rome will likely feel quite warm. Spain felt that lefty warm in March. Any packing strategy would clearly need to take this into account. You will clearly want items that cover knees and shoulders while in Rome (as is typically required in cathedrals).

By the way, if you haven’t been, Rome is an incredible place to visit. We did Rome and Florence after a TA several years ago and while it was sad to leave the ship, I knew our time in Rome would be even better (I’d been there before). Enjoy. curly4dana Posted April 12, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted April 12, 2023 Thanks! My other half has been many times and I’ve been to Milan only. We have three nights in Rome, one night the ballet, then on to the amalfi coast and three days to wing it. Then the Italian open tennis match for our last day before a night in Lisbon.
curly4dana Posted April 12, 2023 Author #5 Share Posted April 12, 2023 I have patches in case I’m seasick which has never happened and layering is the only way to travel! We were in Denver last month and even in 30 degrees it got warm and we peeled. I am packing with layering in mind all the way. Light things that can be layered and a foldable backpack to put the layers that come off. I am still concerned with being outside on the ship but I guess a couple of hoodies should be suffice. I also have a lightweight northface jacket that ill probably pack.

Sounds like a blast. Don’t worry, if you have a water proof outer layer and layers beneath you will be fine. It won’t be freezing. Just chilly at most. Quite possible it could be warm most days. But again, it can vary a lot. We did one in early May and it was pool weather 10/12 days as I recall. This March it was good pool weather for only a few days.

curly4dana Posted April 16, 2023 Author #10 Share Posted April 16, 2023 I’m actually being taken on this trip of a lifetime by the man of a lifetime!! It is something I never in a million years thought I’d be booked on, and at 64 yrs old, you could say this has been on my bucket list for a very very long time… I am so very fortunate. LobsterStalker, you will make that happen! I have faith. 😉

josprince Posted April 16, 2023 #12 Share Posted April 16, 2023 curly4dana, Hello from fellow travelers, Joanna and Tom. This will be our 4th transatlantic, second on the Odyssey. Agree with the previous posts that layering is best. I tend to need more layers than most, and find the Odyssey inside to be chilly. On deck wind might be strong. Temps in our ports will be pleasant, in the 70's. Your plans sound wonderful. We'll see you somewhere on the ship - sailaway, slot pull, majority rules game, 270. ps, We stayed in Delray beach a few times, lovely. Is there still an Elvis show?
djmike Posted April 17, 2023 #13 Share Posted April 17, 2023 A great site to use is Windy.com you can look days ahead at wind, waves, swell and temperature conditions, even in the Atlantic. it’s a great tool and if I were you I would check three days in advance. The further out you look the more it could change. Mike
curly4dana Posted April 17, 2023 Author #14 Share Posted April 17, 2023 Josprince, the Elvis show is no longer. I think the guy retired. I’ve been here 33 years. Originally from nyc. This is my first ta cruise and my partners third time. He’s so chill about it all and I’m the nervous nelly. Let’s meet for a cocktail for sure! Is there a meet and mingle on this cruise? I’ve always been a cruise leader and set them up. This is the first cruise that I’m doing as a real passenger. Can NOT wait for Saturday!!
