Has anyone ever rented a GEM car in Bar Harbor to explore Acadia?

Just looking for tips and reviews. Considering these as an alternative to a bus tour.

I considered it for a milli-second - until I found the prices.  Plus they want proof of car insurance - I could give them my NZ car insurance details - but I don't understand  why-  we have no coverage for overseas car rentals LOL  I think we're stick to town

I’m not sure why everyone is saying it’s expensive. I compared it to other tours like the Ollie trolley, and it’s a fraction of the cost when comparing their 4-hour options.

I agree, doesn't seem too expensive for me. I'm just not sure how easy it is to tour around on your own, would we be better off with a guided tour instead?

It's not a tour - its a rental car - so yes US$275 for a one day hire is expensive.  I'm paying C$60 in Sydney NS in comparison.

Gem  4hr  $250   for 2 

 

I would  take the  tour 

We are there in Oct  so not sure  what we will do  depends on the weather

They must have just raised the prices then. At the time of my previous post, it was around $150 for 4 hours.

The prices are all over the place - the've now dropped to $95 for 4 hours - I'd suggest peole who have booked  check often and maybe cancel and rebook

Also, as I think I understand it, private vehicles are not allowed up Cadillac Mountain without a special permit. Is that correct?  The trolley tour will get you there.

Private cars are allowed, but you need to book a timed ticket in advance now
