groundloop Posted August 13 #1 Share Posted August 13 I'm cruising for the first time out of Baltimore and am trying to guestimate when we'll be passing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Thoughts?
navybankerteacher Posted August 13 #2 Share Posted August 13 We sailed RC Grandeur from Baltimore (about 5:00 PM if I recall correctly) to the Caribbean a few years ago - it is a fairly long way down the Bay - I would estimate that you should pass the bridge/tunnel around midnight. shipgeeks Posted August 14 #3 Share Posted August 14 Are you sailing with RC? Departures are now around 3pm, unless something causes a delay. Passing under the Key Bridge is about half an hour or so later, (fun to watch!) then another bridge some time after that, but still in daylight. I don't think we've ever been aware of the CBBT, but it would be after dark. In returning to Baltimore, we always begin to see the lights of the bridge and tunnel shortly after dinner. It's worth going out on deck then to view the lights and the entry into the bay.
Brighton Line Posted August 14 #4 Share Posted August 14 Don't forget to look for the Red/White/Blue Buoy on the port side 20 minutes after leaving the pier marks the anchor spot of the ship on which Francis Scott Key stood while watching the bombardment of Baltimore and Fort McHenry. You know the famous poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry" you might know by its current name "Star-Spangled Banner". It took us about 10 hours or so for us to reach the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel between 11:30pm and midnight and out past Va. Beach into the open ocean 30-40 minutes later.
