Athens (Piraeus) Excursion Timing

Our ships arrival time is listed as 7AM in Athens. Would we be safe to book a tour that starts at 9:30AM in the Plaka area? I assume we would need time to leave the ship and catch a taxi. We aren't familiar with the port, how easy will it be to find a taxi there, and a rough estimate of the cost for two people? Thanks!

You should be fine.  It does not take long (usually no more then 20 minutes) for a ship to be cleared once the gangway is in place.  You should be able to be off your ship by 7:30 and there are generally taxis waiting at the port.  Prices have been increasing (just like most places in the world) but you should not need to pay more than 25 Euros to get the Plaka.  Just keep in mind that they expect payment in Euros (not dollars).  If the taxi takes credit cards that would also be an option, but my rule of thumb is to always have sufficient cash since you can never be certain that credit cards will be accepted (or even work).

We docked in Pireaus last week and wanted to take a taxi to Athens Archaeological Museum. We researched the price in advance and knew the cost should be between 17 and 24 euros. The taxis lined up outside the cruise terminal all quoted a price of 40 euros. They are very aggressive and kept telling us to get in after opening the back door for us. We refused to get in until we had an agreeable price. They insisted the price would be 40 euros. We ordered an Uber that arrived within 10 minutes and we paid 20 euros. Do your research in advance so you don't overpay!

  • 2 weeks later...

We booked a driver to pick us up at Pireaus and taken to the Acropolis gate from Welcome Pickups and was charged 32 euro total.  Glykeria offered to take us on a tour after 12 and we agreed.  She was a great guide and driver!

Like other posters have said, make sure to agree on a price with taxis and also have a breakdown in euros.  We had two taxi drivers that couldn't break a twenty euro and couldn't take credit cards.  Fortunately I had a bunch of euro coins so it worked out.
