Dún Laoghaire

From what I can discover this port is tender only.   However, my invoice seems to indicate that it is docked.  Any recent experience here?  I know, recent is certainly going to be last year.

We were meant to tender there in September ‘23. The Irish Sea was so rough that, although the crew tried to lower boats, the Captain took the decision it was too risky and we missed Dublin altogether.  I would assume that if it had been possible to dock there, we would have. I was really disappointed but safety comes first and, although a few passengers were moaning, the Captain’s role is to assess risk and we have to accept it.

We tendered in Dun Laoghaire on BIE and the sea looked deceptively calm.  Unfortunately it wasn’t and the trip to shore took nearly 30 minutes and I’d not taken my travel sickness pills.  I was so queasy I couldn’t countenance a coach to Dublin.  Found a place to buy pills and after an hour or so returned to the ship.  We were told that the problem was not the waves, but the current and wind combination which played havoc with the  tender.  We had to circle the ship and wait for a calmer time to get back on Venus.

Another time I’ll take the pills regardless!
Good luck to the OP, ericosmith

We are on the May 1-15 cruise with Dun Laoghaire substituting for Dublin and Bangor for Belfast. Both appear to be tender ports so very disappointed we will not be docking at ports in Dublin and Belfast. Both substitutes look like lovely harbor towns but always a possibility we won’t be able to go ashore. I did research Dun Laoghaire and there are some restaurants/pubs with music so, hopefully, after the Dublin tour we can experience some Irish beer and music. Let’s just hope for good weather.

Dun Laoghaire is a Tender Port with bus shuttle into Dublin Centre taking around 30-40 mins dependant on traffic.

We explored Dublin independently (having been there before and there not being any excursions that interested us) and we took the DART train into the city and back.  It's much faster than the Viking provided shuttle, very easy to use, only 5 pounds for a round trip ticket, and an easy 10 minute walk from the tender dock.  Highly recommend this option.
