Is advanced ticket purchase necessary for Ancient Olympia and museum?

Recommended Posts

Our cruise will dock at Katakolon early next month. We have booked a transfer from Katakolon port to Ancient Olympia (5 hours total) to see the site and museum. I wonder if we can just show up and buy tickets at the ticket office on site? The cruise schedule shows that there are two ships arrival at Katakolon port on the day we are there with total (maximum number of) passengers of 5500.

Your input will be appreciated.

When I was in Katakolon in June 2022 we went to Olympia by taxi and walked up to the ticket booth and bought our tickets. There was no queue and we walked in immediately.

Ditto

No need to book in advance.  However, since you have the transfer booked and there are a lot of pax coming in, you could book your tickets a day or two before while you are on the cruise.  It could save you a little time.

Has anyone done this on their own?Just got a taxi at the port? If so how much was the taxi?

In June 2022 we got a taxi to Olympia because the train was not running. We shared with another couple that we met at the train station. It cost €80 (€20 each) for the ride to Olympia, the driver waited for us for two hours and then drove us back to Katakolon.

Thank you, thats helpful. We are a group of 4 trying to decide if it’s better to just go to Olympia and do an in depth tour rather then pay for a tour that takes you to the wineries, honey farm etc… seems hard to find so we though perhaps a taxi and a DIY tour might make sense.

There are busses waiting at the port gates that do the return journey.  It is quite inexpensive, maybe €15 per person.

We rented a car from a place close to the port gate, booked in advance but no payment or cc number - they hold the car until your booked time, then give it to walk-ins if you don't show. Good newish little four-seater, very simple route. Some years ago, but the cost including a cupful of fuel was about the same for four people taking the Katacolon Express bus. (that bus allows two hours at Olympia)

Thanks for the replies about entrance tickets for the Ancient Olympic. I guess we will just show up to buy tickets at the gate as it does not sound like a very crowed place, and the tickets are non-refundable in case of bad weather etc.

Appreciate your input.
