Just in case anyone hasn't seen it in the TV schedule

That's me - When Big Brother's on I normally don't watch anything else:p but I could do with a change - thanks for pointing it out

Are you sure you want to watch this:

Mary Nightingale and her team expose and investigate the truth behind viewers' holiday nightmares. Cruises Undercover examines the potential pitfalls of a holiday on water, with an undercover microbiologist testing a cruise liner on the Nile and the shocking results found in food, swimming pools and accommodation. Plus, crime on the high seas, heartbreaking stories of families who have lost loved ones overboard, gross failures of security and cover ups.

Whats the UK equivalent of 'Trailer Trash TV'?

Peter

Expect long whinges of 'its not fair' and people refusing to take responsibility for their own folly......

What is Trailer Trash TV?

lansonlady

It's almost anything that appears on ITV (a TV station with adverts, unlike the BBC).

Fortunately, like Mrs Bucket, my television cannot receive ITV (I think, I've never asked the staff to look for it).

(In reality, thanks to cable, I could watch loads of channels. ITV 1 is bad but ITV 2, 3, and esp 4 are the pits, real "trailer trash TV").

Pity I'm busy later tonight...

OK, so I watched it......(its sponsored by an online casino....)....key 'highlights' included:

  • If you go to Egypt you might get a bad tummy....and its probably the food....and of the food...the buffet. Whodathunk it? Oh yes, and maybe the cabin isn't spotless...and don't drink the water in the pool....Its SHOCKING - abroad should be just like home....The best bit was when the undercover reporter got tummy trouble.....
  • Mutiny on the QM2. Lots of 'Absolutely Disgusted!' and 'Absolutely Disgraceful!'s...They didn't mention not leaving tips for the crew....funny that.......
  • Are older ships unsafe? Fire on the Calypso in the English Channel - nobody hurt.....at least they weren't imprisoned on the QM2 (see above)
  • Crime at sea.....the George & Jennifer Smith story.....A 15 year old drinks 5 cocktails....her parents find her & put her in her cabin - she falls overboard - the parents blame the cruise line, naturally.
  • Sea Princess Noro Virus.....plenty of blaming the cruise line....individual pax personal hygiene beyond reproach, of course.

To follow on from Peter's brilliant summing up of this programme, there were really only 2 serious issues as far as I could see and they did not belong on a progarmme like this.

Any fire at sea is a very serious affair. Luckily no one was hurt in this case. But to slip it into a programme that also included people feeling unwell on a Nile cruise is a first class example of trailer trash tv. No investigation was done by our reporter into how the fire started. She indicated that a passenger alerted the Captain but didn't tell us if the crew already knew about the fire, and if not why not? And if they did already know why hadn't they alerted the passengers? She was almost upset when she told us that the ships own fire prevention and containment systems had put out the fire before help arrived.

Serving drinks to a 15 year old. Why was she left on her own to go to bars and then, having been taken to her cabin "unable to stand", was she left alone again by her parents? You might want to ask the father of the child for his answers, but our reporter didn't ask him a single question "on air". The child's card indicated she was well under age however and she should not have been served even one drink. But the cruise line sacked the bar guy and have retrained the bar staff we were told. George Smith falling or being pushed over the side was tragic, and, like the 15 year old a waste of a young life.

The rest was padding to get the prog up to an hour running time. Peter liked the undercover reporter getting tummy touble, my favorite bit was the guy who'd been confined to his cabin for 2 days with the bug, kissing his bride on the lips within an hour of getting out and then her going down with it within 2 hours! You couldn't dream this stuff up.

As for the people who got a cruise on the biggest liner in the world from New York to Rio FOR FREE with 9 sea days in the second leg (and I'm only getting 6 in September, damn, and I've got pay for those), don't get me started. Let's just say it's "absolutely disgusting" and "disgraceful".

Amongst all the relatives who lost loved ones and the people who hadn't washed their hands there was one person whom my heart went out to, Commodore Warwick. He was standing alone in the spotlights on the stage of the Royal Court Theatre facing a barrage of questions. He looked quite broken.

And now I can return to watching quality TV (I hope).

I've just watched this.

The first piece, on Nile cruises (which I have done), confused me. The ship has been taken out of service and the problems solved. So where's the story?

The QM2 piece was clearly about bad problem/situation management not poor seamanship or onboard service.

Fire onboard, yes, been there done that. And this program added nothing to my understanding of the situation.

Missing persons. Almost no mention of the prime suspect in the case, who has now settled - out of court - with the cruise line.

Underage drinking, and Norovirus:- well Pepperrn has said it all.

Regards, Colin.

There just seemed to be so much incorrect information, it made the show almost laughable. Where did that security officer get his ideas about being no law on ships? Inside 12miles the ship goes by the country whos waters it is, and outside they go by the flag in which they sail under. But he made it sound like ships made their own rules up!

They managed to blame the norovirus on the ship, but do they not understand that so many people bring the virus on, it's extremely difficult to contain.

Same comments re the drunk girl... very very sad, but she shouldn't have been left alone..

And well, the Nile trip - what more can I say!!:)

Thankyou Pepperrn - You learn something new everyday!

lansonlady

My apologies, had I realised you were here in the UK I would have just said "It's almost anything that appears on ITV" and left it at that! Silly me!

Very best wishes

Absolutely no apology required!

I have never heard ITV referred to as Trailor Trash TV:) However I don't watch a lot of TV - if I did perhaps I would be more informed!

Thanks Again,

lansonlady.

Only if you've exhausted all the Big Brother re-runs......

Exhausted the reruns? I'm not up to date with the broadcasts as it is! (I don't know why I'm not caught up - I only watch about two hours per day of the mass that's broadcast:rolleyes: )

I was at a loose end this morning - so I watched it. Most of the programme was about dreadful things that I know nothing about. When they talked about dreadful things that I do have some knowledge of I couldn't help but think they were wrong. I suspect that they were equally misguided on those things I'm not so aware of.
