happy cruzer Posted October 5, 2006 #10 Share Posted October 5, 2006 Hi, Still looking for details about the wine packages. But just in general, any comments on the wine list. Any favorites or culls? We've been studing the 10 day cruise menus and have started thinking about wines. Thanks.
garydm Posted October 5, 2006 #11 Share Posted October 5, 2006 We are just off the Statendam and the wine list is similar. We liked the Spellbound Cabernet, which I think was $38. The wine list is uninspiring and expensive. If you really like wine, I would suggest bringing some onboard or purchase at a stop, and pay the corkage fee. You will be pressured at dinner to buy tickets to the "premium wine" tasting the next day. The wines are not premium wines in my view and the $35 charge is excessive. fann1sh Posted October 5, 2006 #12 Share Posted October 5, 2006 Hi, there - if I had more than 2 working brain cells left, maybe I could remember wine names....We bring wine aboard, but also entertain (or just drink too much) and run out. We sampled the Navigator wines at a tasting first day out, and were surprised to find the Chilean Merlot quite acceptable. Whether that's the same bin 291 Errazuriz Merlot listed above....sorry, those 2 working brain cells are too overstressed.
fann1sh Posted October 5, 2006 #13 Share Posted October 5, 2006 - we really APPALLED  the wine steward when we ordered the 013 Chase Limogere sparkling - it's definitely in the Navigator package. Granted, no one is ever going to confuse it with Veuve Cliquot :D, but it's a perfectly acceptable glass of brut bubbles to accompany dessert
kakalina Posted October 5, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 5, 2006 The Caymus Cabernet Savignon is marvelous. We aren't much for drinking wine as I usually find it too acid. This was so good that the CD and I finished an entire bottle at dinner in the PG. Too bad one can't get it by the glass.
iceman93 Posted October 6, 2006 #15 Share Posted October 6, 2006 The wine list is uninspiring and expensive. Wow, I really have to disagree. At the low end it is pricey, but I challenge you to find a restaurant that offers Caymus Cab or Penfold's Grange for those prices. And the list itself offers a pretty wide selection of varietals and countries of origin. Plus, most ships have bottles that aren't on the list--just ask your sommelier. MattOsprey Posted October 6, 2006 #16 Share Posted October 6, 2006 I think there could be a better priced Rioja. Then we would be happy. Maybe we will bring a couple as well as trying out a few new ones. Only 18 days to V day!!!

happy cruzer Posted October 6, 2006 #18 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Your advice will help me narrow down the list of wines to try at home to know what to have from the winelist or to carryon. Depending on what you are comparing the list to, it could look overpriced and limited. I compared it price wise and selection wise to RCI and HALs list was way better. I compares well to NCL and to Princess. And the wonderful thing is that you can bring your own wine onboard. That will help fix both issues- price and selection. the list compares to a high end restaurent where I live but there are many restaurents that only mark up times two but their lists are more limited. Then of course there are the fantastic restaurants with a book for a wine list, that may be hard to do on a ship. DH wants to bring some very nice reds. I like whites tooo. so I will definitely be looking at the list. The advice on the Chase Limogere will definitely be helpful. Everyone 's red wine choices lined up with what I was expecting too. I agree they are light on the Spanish wines. but hey, we can just lug those onboard ourselves.
garydm Posted October 6, 2006 #19 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Iceman-hard to tell when they don't indicate the year for the Caymus. I think it generally retails for around $50 so $96 may not be outrageous. I would be hard pressed to pay $380 for a bottle of wine on a ship given the conditions it has probably been exposed to. We had a 2000 Brunelo onboard last week and I think the HAL price was just under $100 and it would probably be in the low $80s in a restaurant. It was not outstanding.
