New York Question

Yes there is something called TKTS in NY that has discount tickets to Broadway shows. The one everyone knows is in Times Square that is a Zoo, there is a second one by the south Street seaport that rarely has lines. Also at www.playbill.com they have something called the playbill club that also has discount tickets to most but not all shows. Any of the musicals are fine for great entertainment.

We saw Mary Poppins in London and it was fantastic, a real jaw dropping spectacular with lots of staging effects and flying moments. It is coming to Broadway soon and should be a sellout.

We are in NYC in a couple of weeks for our Dawn cruise and have booked "The Drowsy Chaperone" which looks really good fun.

Before booking anything have a look at the articles and videos on www.broadway.com and check out the discounts and promotional codes on www.broadwaybox.com We saved $20 per ticket just by knowing the code to enter on ticketmaster.

All those shows listed are said to be good. I want to see Wicked and Mary Poppins next. Lion King and Beauty and the Beast was great too. Aida was excellent but that's old news now. I love the Disney productions.

USHER just took over the lead in Chicago, he should be good in it.

If you want to laugh your a** off AVENUE Q is very funny. Be careful though, there's puppet sex LOL

Chicago was very good. If you want to see a musical comedy I loved Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, you should be able to get tickets at TKTS or playbill.com. If you go to TKTS in times square, be aware that the have moved to a temporary location just a block north and west, to the mariott marquis hotel on west 46th street. You will always get the cheapest tickerts there, but can not purchase in advance, so it is hit or miss. :)

I was just in NYC and my daughter was there for this summer since June 1 and saw just about every Broadway show playing.

I thought Hairspray was one of the best, most fun shows I've seen! And there are discounts available now. Wicked is excellent - tickets are hard to come by. My daughter saw The Color Purple Tuesday - Great!. Oh and we saw Spamalot 2 weekends ago. Laughed and Laughed.

Try http://www.broadwaybox.com It gives you discount codes available for every show.

Lots of good advice above....

Before you get your heart set on buying something at the TKTS booth-check out www.tdf.org/tkts to get an idea what was available at the booth last week. The really "hot" shows (ie Wicked, Mamma Mia, Drowsey Chaperone) are not going to be available. That's not to say you can't get a deal on a great show. Hairspray, Chicago, Avenue Q (for adults only), Rent, etc are excellent choices too.

If I had to suggest 1 show (and you were willing to pay full price for tickets) it would be Wicked. It's a great story with beautiful music thats a little bit fun and a little bit serious. The Wizard of Oz storyline is twisted and turned so that it's something new and interesteing. There's great staging and lights and costumes that really make you feel like your seeing something great. Great for a broadway virgin or someone's that's been around the block a couple times. Definatly worth the ticket it price. If you decide to see it though, buy tickets now. When I was in NYC in March, it was sold out through August.

If you are feeling lucky, a lot of shows have a lottery drawing for the front row seats for about $25. It requires you to line up in front of the theater about 2 hours before the show and then put your name in the drawing to win the opportunity to buy 2 front row tickets. Shows that do this include (but are not limited to) Wicked, Rent, Avenue Q, Spamalot, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Hairspray. Be prepared to wait in line a little bit...and you may not win...but if you do, it's totally worth the wait. Check out the individual websites of these shows to get the exact details.

Someone mentioned Dirty Rotten Scoundrels--but that closes Sept 3rd..so you may have missed the boat on that one (no pun intended)

You're from Oregon. You're in NYC for one night, one show. Don't worry about getting a discount. Get a copy of the New York Times Sunday edition and see all the shows playing. If they sound interesting, take a look at the shows' websites. Pick your favorite. What hotel are you staying at? If it's a first class one, the concierge will be able to connect for tickets to the show you want. It's gonna cost, but if that's what you want to see, go for it. If it really doesn't matter to you, some of the previous posters had good suggestions on how to pick up discount tickets.

I would suggest either Mary Poppins or Phantom of the Opera. You're gonna have to go for the "long ball" on the former.

If there is something you want to see and can't get tickets for try ticketmaster or telecharge starting a few days prior to the show. They sometimes release tickets at the last minute that may have been held for some reason.I've used this method quite a few times with great results.

I have also got some good discounts through PLAYBILL.COM...

I am sorry but these two are what can best be described as Disney Musicals...good but very mundane. If you want a NY experience try Rent(get balcony seats), or the Producers(it was better than the new movie but not the old one).

Also most of these can be obtained at discounts and my view is why pay full price when you can get a decent seat at a reasonable amount. You can get seats for sold out one sometimes for as much as $500.00 or more....The list price for some orchestra seats at full price is in excess of $100.00

There's nothing wrong with a Disney experience as tens of millions of Americans attest to each year. I stick with Mary Poppins as the current leader of "tourista" shows. The folks back home will love hearing about it and you'll come out happy without solving the problems of the world.

Rent is a downer, without any comment on its theatrical merit. I certainly wouldn't bring out of town clients to that show for an enjoyable evening.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with the Disney experience but its not a NY one, and you can get it anywhere in the Country. Would I take someone from out of town to see Rent--not my UTah friends...depends on who it is. Avenue "Q" which is about Brooklyn is also not something that some outof towners would like---you know puppet sex and porno....go to it, it is fun and unusual but definitely not Disney...

On our first visit to New York in April we chose to go to Wicked. We've seen various musicals both in London and Edinburgh but Wicked had not transferred to London yet (starts this month). We were so impressed we're seriously considering visiting London just to go and see it AGAIN. We purchased our tickets in advance via Ticketmaster. Total of $356 for 3 tickets. Definitely worth checking the seating plan (goes for any show you want to see). We were on the Mezzanine level, row C, seats 104 - 106 - great location. Don't think you would want to be too close to the stage for this one.

I agree. It's not like you get here on a regular basis. Why would you want to risk not seeing a show you want to see or get stuck in the nose-bleed section? The TKTS place is good if you're here for a while and don't really care if you see a show or not. And the "ticket lottery" is also not great for infrequent visitors unless you've got "plan B" for when you don't get tickets.

Go to www.playbill.com and look at some reviews and select a few that interest you and then book tickets online. They'll be full price, but not the price you'd have to pay a hotel concierge for last minute seats.

I recently saw The History Boys and loved it. However, it's a play,(a comedy) not a musical.

Pick what you want to see and buy your tickets in advance. How often do you go to New York. We have advanced tickets for 'Lion King" for our Oct cruise....even though it is Disney it is also Elton John/Tim Rice music. Have never read anything negative. Pick what you want and go for it.

Really depends what you like. I love musicals -- Mama Mia, Hairpsray, Rent (which I've seen about a dozen times, so I disagree with the poster who gave it a bad review - the music is awesome).

Lion King was great too - but I did that on a school field trip with my son. I wouldn't have picked it but I was really pleasantly surprised.

My parents just saw The Wedding Singer this weekend and said it was great.

I was just told about Broadwaybox.com and found it to be great. Bought tix for an off-Broadway show (Stomp - used to be on Broadway) for only $30 each.

I agree that you should not wait until you get to NY to buy tickets. But you still can buy discounted tickets and get good seats by using http://www.broadwaybox.com to look for the discount codes. You will not get discounts on the most popular shows like Wicked, but you can get discounts on many shows. And I've never bought tickets in a section I just had to settle for.

http://www.playbill.com is where I got my first discounted tickets about 6 yrs ago. The great thing about broadwaybox.com is it gives you the discounts for all webistes and offers. So you don't miss a discount because you are not looking in the right place.

I'm trying right now for end of October, but most discounts only go to the Oct. 1. So I'm waiting......

Also, TKTS only takes CASH. I was there a few weeks ago and way too many people in line who did not know this.

But with only limited time, try and get your tickets before you go. Also don't overlook some great off broadway- Slava's Snowshow, Stop, Blue Man can be cheaper options if you want to add a second show. :) I go for 4 days mid week and see 4 shows- my priority. :)
