Tips or advice on shore excursions @ Nassau or Cococay

We are going kayaking on Coco Cay in January.. that's lots of fun if you haven't tried it but if it's windy and you aren't used to it ( like I was not the first time, fortunately DH was) it can be more work than you think it will be!

In Nassau you don't really need to do a tour unless you want snorkeling which IMHO is much better handled thru the ship. You can take a cab to Atlantis, see the town on your own etc.

If you haven't done it before and are not claustrophobic the Atlantis submarine dive - I think it is offered in Nassau - is awesome if you aren't a diver.. whole new perspective on the "underworld"

We've booked the Pirates and Dungeons Tour thru RCCL for our 8-yr. old son. We figure it will be something fun for him, but still leave a bit of time for us adults to do some things.

I'm sure you'll find something good to do in Nassau!

We were on the Majesty last week (10/23-10/27) We didnt book any excrusions in Nassau or CocoCay...in Nassau we just walked around downtown went to the straw market and went to have a drink and a bite at Senior Frogs...a couple hours in that city was enought for me. On CocoCay we just walked the nature trail and then back down the beach and then enjoyed the beach...we didnt need any floaty mats...the water is so salty it is very boyant..so you just float on your own...it was very nice...(except I got sunburned:eek: :p ;) )...dont forget the sunblock(like I did), it is expensive on the island

You will have a great time....

BTW, we didnt have a problem with any jelly fish...I heard one lady say she saw one while snorkling....but she was pretty far out...

My wife and I enjoy the snorkeling here. You can see mant different types of fish and ever some rays on occasion. There is a plane that someone put there in the water, but its still cool to look at. We also do the waverunner tour. We do this first then snorkel, then do the float mats...then nap time...lol

Youll love Coco Cay. Oh and make sure you try the Coco Loco...yum ...yum..says pappa bear. : ) The straw market is ok...little over priced, but kinda cool.

Have fun....

You can save your money by not paying for excursions on Coco Cay. It's a beach day, pure and simple! Just like on the ship, all food is included, alcohol and soft drinks are extra--use your seapass. You don't need the mats, but if you decide to get a float, just do it on the island. They have plenty! The waverunners can also be booked on the island--I've yet to see them booked solid! When you get off the tender, if you keep walking past the 1st beach you come to, you will find much more seclusion!

On Nassau--unless you want to do a "party barge" or something like that, just walk around the blocks where the shopping is---it's junky stuff, but some folks like it. You can take a taxi to Atlantis and gamble there. (You're not allowed on their beach, however, unless you book a day room--what a waste of money!!!) We find that Nassau is a great day to stay on the ship and use the pool in relative quiet!!! (Nassau is not our favorite stop!!)

While we were in Nassau, we did the tour boat/Atlantis excursion that took us from the pier over to Atlantis. Not very expensive and only about 20 minutes to get to Atlantis and then walked thru the big dig, where our tour ended. Then we walked the grounds at Atlantis and played at the Casino and then we grabbed a cab (with several other cruisers for about $4.00/person) back to pier. It was a nice way to spend 3-4 hrs. On Coco Cay, we did the Wave Runner. That was a lot of fun. Much to my surprise, the water where they took us wasn't very deep at all - maybe up to my waist (I'm 5' tall) - so that made the excursion very comfortable. We got to see and hold a star fish that was the size of a dinner plate. They made several stops while out on the Wave Runners to show us various places. Enjoy your cruise!

afranco21 - I forgot to mention. FYI!! While we were on Coco Cay for our 2nd cruise there in September 05 - my husband and I walked around the Island - when we would go near the water to walk - we saw many, many jelly fish of all sizes. No kidding - there were some that were about 8 - 10" in diameter. Yuke!

You can also parasail on CocoCay. I would recommend booking it in advance, however, because it was sold out once my nephew decided he wanted to do it.

Some of us also did the waverunner excursion--did not book it ahead either--and as the other poster stated, it was not sold out and had openings on and off throughout the day. My nephews and friends LOVED it.

Have a fabulous time! :)

  • 1 month later...

You can read about a lot of different things to do at the ports of call forum. That is where I found out about taking the number 10 jitney to the fish fry for some good local food. It's $1 each way on the jitney and you'll ride with the locals. Tell the driver you want off at the fish fry and you won't get lost. There are loads of places to eat lunch. The biggest problem will be deciding where to eat.

If you've done all the touristy excursions in Nassau, this is a fun change of pace.
