Carnival Secrets they Usually Don't Tell You About 2

All the seasoned cruisers are going to have a good laugh at my expense, but you can detach the days activities instead of carrying the whole capers. I didn't figure it out until the last day of my first cruise.

Don't be embarrassed, I didn't even know you can detach it. :o

I'll be 53 at 30 years and 56 at 33, so either way, should be young enough to raise hell!!!

I have 12 to 14 years left. I'll be 43 or 45.

If there were LEO only cruises imagine the chaos:eek:  . All of us would be banned for life.

I'm not in K-9. My screen name comes from a time when I worked at a truck yard and had to monitor truck driver's radios.

This may of been asked many times before, (search option is down), we have a LARGE deposit on a 2010 cruise, (due to a TA cancellation), if I had the 'extra' deposit transferred to our Dec cruise, could we get cash from the casino and have it charged to our S&S card?

Sundae spoons? I've never heard them called that. I worked in a restaurant for many years and knew them by (ice) tea spoons.

they are essentially the same, though technically I heard sundae spoons are a bit shorter than iced tea spoons,,,,,because sundae "cups" aren't as tall as iced tea glasses,,,,

but only in the South do they call "iced" tea "sweet" tea (or unsweet tea),,,,,at least as far as I know,,,,I never heard it called sweet tea til I moved south,,,

You can record custom voice mail messages on your cabin phone. If you don't set a message at the begining of the cruise you will have someone else's voicemail set on your phone from a previous cruise.

You can even have fun with this feature by leaving embarassing messages on your phone at the end the cruise for future cabin guests.:D

Iced tea and sweet tea are different animals.

"Sweet tea" has sugar mixed in with it during the brew process...so you don't need to add your own sweetner when it arrives to your table.

This may not be the correct terminology. However, the wrapper from a serving of butter can be folded up in a way to resemble a birds beak.

I had a waiter that was full of pranks so I placed the "birds beak" in the bottom of a chicken salad. When there was very little of the salad remaining I complained to the waiter. The waiter looked nervous while he tried to handle my complaint. He figured out it was a joke when one of the woman at my table started laughing and then the rest of us started laughing too.

I save the plastic bags my purchases on the ship come in (or even purchases in ports) as they are great to pack shoes in or small items that might get lost in luggage. When I get home, I just leave the empty bags in the empty suitcase and they are there when it is time to pack again. I have done this for years.

It must be a southern thing I'm guessing? I live in OH and tea isn't a big thing here, so I dobut they have those spoons for tea. In fact alot of places only serve tea in the summer. And I don;t think there is even such a thing as sweet tea here. LOL!

Oh, those are called Sundae spoons here. Never seen anyone use it for ice tea?

Little known fact: Another great use for those long spoons are for Champagne! It has to be a silver spoon though. It keeps the bubbly, well....bubbly for longer than just corking it.

Just drop the spoon handle down into the bottle with the spoon part sticking out and the handle touching the champagne. It's some kind of reaction between the carbonation and the silver but it actually works.

I don't know how much this will help on a ship but, I read in several posts that sometimes the room smells musty, especially an interior and especially after it rains.

I'm over in Iraq right now and our "rooms" tend to smell a little musty too after a while. The worst part is, it gets into our clothes so, what I did to help alleviate the nasty smell is to drop dryer sheets (I prefer Downy) into the drawers and sometimes between the folded clothes. It seems to help the clothes smell like they were just freshly laundered.

It will also help, if you must pack wet suits when you leave, to put a few dryer sheets in with it as well. It will keep the mildew smell out while you're travelling back home.

Just a thought. Hope it helps. I can't wait to start applying all these great tips to my first cruise!

-Cheers

Can someone enlighten me about these "secret doors" that most ships have? I must say I am intrigued...

At this point I don't consider these "secret" doors. I consider them to be slightly hidden doors. I stumbled upon the doors when I was on the Freedom and I didn't even know they were being called "secret".

After spending hours reading the original thread...I "borrowed" this from one of the posters. Let's see if we can continue this one and make it a bit easier for all of us....

If you don’t like what is offered on the main menu, you can ask the waiter for either a steak or grilled chicken.

Any pasta item on the main menu CAN be ordered as an appetizer. Just ask.

Post cards, foreign postage stamps and playing cards are available at the pursars desk.

Get a FREE lanyard at the Casino. Pursars desk will punch a whole in it for you.

24 hour pizza place also serves Calzones and Caesar salads. If you want a special topping and they have it they will make you that pizza.

Go to tea-time they have different snacks and its a nice place to relax

Ask the steward if you forget something ie toothpaste...they often have samples

Bring baggies of assorted sizes. For saving snacks for excursions and wet clothes.

Take the tour of the galley

They have an early and late night seating as well as captains party...take advantage of both for double free drinks.

Bring on own bottles of water, and soda and save $$$

Bring a reusable cup with lid...less trips to get a drink

Ask for your drink in a plastic cup (not the fancy one ) saves $$$

You may be able to eat free lunch at the places they charge for dinner

Orange juice is available at the same place all day they just remove the label

You may get a free facial if you call the spa and ask to be a volunteer.

Tie a bright ribbon/scarf to your luggage for easy spotting. Also can work on cabin door

When the regular hot tub is too full, use the spa one.

Use of the sauna/steam room is free

Use the spa shower if multiple people need to shower at same time

Ask for children’s dessert menu (banana splits)

Bring Duct tape

Bring a highlighter

Bring post it notes

Sit close at the port talks sometimes they toss out free stuff

You can ask for extra pillow chocolates

Bring an extension cord/power strip

Early and extra tips for stewards = more perks for you

You can order free drinks from the bar in the room at Captains dinner as opposed to those on the tray.

Bring travel hooks to hang stuff in your room

Bring a few paper funnels to make filling the water bottle easier.

Bring towels from home to avoid fearing losing one

Take a hand towel with you to the beach it will help remove sand and is handy for lots of other things too

Baby powder helps remove sand

Use a magnet to trick the balcony door into thinking its closed to keep the air on

Most ships have a secret door...find it

You can also print cards to take with you on the layout of the ship...simply use a word document...format in normal 8pt bold: Times New Roman: 8pt and divide into for equal columns.

Self disembarkation is FASTER

It is possible to ‘smuggle’ alcohol on board

Make sure to stock up on "snacks" before debarkation. The wait can be pretty long and everything is closed during this time. Except for the coffee shop which takes cash

Cards become demagnetized don’t use your credit card for the room safe

If the safe will not open call the desk they will send someone to open it

If you get sea sick you can go to the Pursers desk and ask for pills. They are free there

Use your telephone for leaving each other messages in the cabins

Did you know you can call Carnival's Bon voyage department and pre-order alcohol to be delivered to your cabin? You can order bottles of hard liquor so that you can make your own drinks. You can't order online. You must call to set this up. It is a little pricey but worth it and cheaper than buying by the drink.

Do walk the entire ship on your first day

You can also ask your Room Steward for the book that is in your cabin

Bring a night light/ alarm clock

Bring water shoes

The ship uses two types of toilet paper. Both are made by the same company. The sandpaper they call "envision" you will not want to subject your bottom to for 8 days. Ask your room steward to make sure that your stateroom is stocked with the "preference" paper instead.

Bring a sweater the dining room can be cold

Hope this helps

Elaine,

I see on your signature you have "costa Magica" (biggest mistake ever)...We did the Magica in 2007 and loved it so much we went on Costa last year! Sorry you didn't like it...The ship itself to me was so "Carnival" and the European flair was a splendid change to the normal "American" cruise experience we usually have with Carnival. Our Cruise director Max on the Magica was the best we've ever had, very personal, very talented, extremely friendly and spoke 6 languages fluently! I just had to comment on this, sorry I know it had nothing to do with this thread...Oooooops sorry everyone

I know we're not supposed to take food off the ships but ... I pack extra sandwich size zip lock bags, order room service the night before an excursion and pack a lunch. In this tight economy, every penny counts.

If you're into music like we are, we bring our IPOD with speakers and play music in our room or out on the balcony. We have to have OUR music.

There are travel size toilet seat covers, toilet paper and baby wipes. I would never put my booty down on a toilet in the US much less in some of these ports. Alot of the bathrooms don't have toilet paper or soap to wash your hands. I'm a nurse and all the bacteria roaming out there scares the hell out of me.

I always bring a batteried operated candle. Our cruises are just for the DH and me and it's our alone and romantic time. Between the decorations I put up and the candle, sometimes we have a hard time leaving the room - just kidding but I'm just sayin'! LOL!

And last but certainly not least, I never leave home without my rum runners - whether it's cruising or something else. I have taken these babies into concerts, sport events, the beach, boating, and parties at other houses. They are compact and priceless.

I tried to put a link to my packing list but it was too big. If anyone wants it send me an email to evelyn.p.silva @ gmaildotcom. I'll be happy to send it to you.

Happy cruising!
