Guavaberry Liquer

Recommended Posts

Guavaberry Emporium sells guavaberry liquer. Has anybody bought this? How does it taste? Is it located near the pier?

I've been to St. Martin before and took a very very long unscheduled walk around the island and didn't see it, but then again, I wasn't looking for it.

<snip> took a very very long unscheduled walk around the island and didn't see it <snip>

That must have been QUITE a walk.

Were you re-enacting the legend of how the island was divided between the French and Dutch?

The Guavaberry Emporium is located in downtown Philipsburg on Front Street towards the Eastern end of the street. See this map. Guavaberry is #8 on the map. The cruise facility is just off the bottom of the right-hand side of the map, in Point Blanche.

I think it tastes pretty nasty straight, but can contribute an interesting touch to many blended drinks.

Guavaberry is very sweet and definitely an acquired taste. Got back from St Maarten last Sunday and only bought the variety pack this time...the last bottle of Guavaberry is still in the cupboard! Also, you can buy it cheaper at the main liquor store on Front St. but the Guavaberry Emporium is interesting and has a variety of painted bottles to add to the mystique.

There is little stand on the pier right after you get off the boat. The man there sells different liquors including Guavaberry. The Guavaberry Imporium in Phillipsburg let us sample the straight Guavaberry liquor and another drink blend they made with the liquor. People seem to either like it or hate it. We actually liked it and bought a small bottle home. They sold other things in the emporium like Guavaberry jelly.

Straight, I think it tastes like cough syrup; blended into a tropical drink (such as a colada), I think it tastes delightful. There is at least one shop that has tastings of the other island-made liqueurs, as well as the guavaberry. They are all pretty syrupy as is, but pretty tasty as an accent in mixed drinks.

Any liqueur (like Guavaberry) that tastes terrible straight up is best for cleaning car tires. If you put enough coconut syrup (CoCo Loco) in with the Guavaberry to make a colada, it starts to taste pretty good. Matter of fact, if you put lots of CoCo Loco in with bathroom tile cleaner, that too starts to taste pretty good.

I always buy Ma Doudou, a locally produced flavored rum that's significantly better than Guavaberry.

Gary, my mother ( who is the true adventurer :D ) decided that she wanted to walk, so we walked. I have never seen filth as I did when we took that unscheduled walk. We figured that we would just follow the street and see where it led us.

When we got to the end, we could see the cruise ship (we took the Carnival Pride) to the far left of us, did we go left towards the ship? No, we go right and try to make a circle..lol. She started to get nervous, and I started to ask for directions back to the Jump Up! Casino..as that was where we started out at. We made our way back to the casino and saw the ship that was nearby. It was an interesting walk, met some nice people along the way, but won't do it again this time around..

It is just like a cough syrup straight, but get the Coco Loco and some pineapple

juice in there and you have a fantastic Colada. I bought some in April when we

were there and saved it for Mother's Day:)

They give out free samples of the "guavaberry colada" at the emporiam and you can buy a whole glass if you really want to taste it. I don't like it straight either, but then again I don't drink alot and don't like anything straight up. I purchased a bottle and it comes with a little booklet with the recipes for the colada and other drinks that I think are quite tasty. But I tried a full glass before I purchased.

I loved it! I had a glass and bought a hand-painted bottle that sits, empty, on my bar. Upon our return, I had a party, and made guavaberry coladas for everyone. The part was a huge success and everyone loved the drink :D

I loved the guavaberry colada they let us sample at the Emporium so we bought several bottles and gave them as thank you gifts for everyone that kept an eye on our house while we were gone. I thought it would be a unique gift that I could only get in the caribbean. I only bought one bottle for us and was sorry, it went fast, but I LOVE sweet foofoo drinks. It will definately be something we look for again when we are in St. Martin this Dec.

I've been meaning to say: Now that is funny.:D

When we went tasting, we all tasted the guavaberry liqueur and said, "Why would we drink this?" We did, however, like the lime and mango liqueurs. Later at Orient, my DH and I wandered off for lunch; my sister and BIL wandered the other direction. When they came back, my sister had brought me a guavaberry colada (I'm not sure if it was the liqueur or if it had the guavaberry rum in it). It was pretty darn tasty, but definitely not something we'd go out of our way to get. I brought home 6 or 7 little minis of the various liqueurs. Truth be told, I've still got the two mini guavaberry liqueurs. One of these days, I guess I should make some coladas with them.

I'm very interested in the rum you mention. Maybe "next time" we're there.
