Info on Value Added Tax

Recommended Posts

All purchases in the UK have a VAT which can be as much as 20%. :) This tax is fully refundable when you are leaving the UK. Save your receipts and present them to the VAT refund counter at the air-terminal before you depart the UK.

Just a way the Brits thank their relatives in the Colonies for visiting the UK!! :D LOL

There are some rules on this, like a minimum amount in one shop etc. Not all shops participate.

Also you will not get the full amount back.

Check this website for more details:http://www.globalrefund.com/

Not all goods have VAT added, and the max is 17/5%, receipts will be given for redemption on some goods.

Additional information:

it's not only the UK but also all EU-countries:

So for cruisers on Baltic Sea cruise:

1. only for purchases taken out of the EU - because once you are leaving the EU you must proof the export by showing to the customs on request!!!

2. collect for all applicable purchases from all EU-countries (on Baltic cruises: not in Norway and not in Russia) and then present at last airport/port before you are FINALLY leave the EU. (In Norway you must do it locally).

3. Therefore VAT is different in all single EU-countries - so it's not 20% all over the EU. And check exactly: Mostly you get only abt. 8-12% back because in EU all prices are incl. VAT!!! So the price will be recalculated again. So you never have saved 20%. It's nonsense!!!

HeinBloed

Try to make sure that you get the refund in cash at the airport (before you check in your bags). Following the Global refund instructions to get a cheque is mostly a waste of time, as it will come in the currency of the country you have left. You lose almost all in bank charges. I have several very useless euro cheques which the bank will not cash.

Another thing to note about VAT is that is not added to the cost shown on any pricing ticket, menu or advertisement (except for some items that might be used for business, such as computers) so don't think you need to add 17.5% on to the cost of everything you see.

In summary, the price you see will be the price you pay.

Nick.
