Renting Wheelchairs on Cruise

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to rent a wheelchair on the Conquest? My father-in-law should really use one and doesn't own one himself. He is a large man (380 lbs) and would need a rather large wheelchair. Does anyone know if they are available to rent on the boat?

There's a limited number on the ship itself. There are also companies that rent wheelchairs/scooters. They'll be in your cabin upon arrival. Contact tbe Special Needs Department for a list of companies providing wheelchairs

You may want to check with your local equipment (Not Medical) rental. Our local "Rent All" wheelchair rnets for $32.29 per week. Also had the use of the wheelchair in the airports before and after the cruise. The medical equipment company recommended by Carnival "Care???" was over $125 for 1 week. "Care??" did offer deliever and pick from the dock for the wheelchair.

I'm not sure about the size of the wheelchair but I am sure that wheelchairs can be obtained from the pursers desk with a dep. hold. no one at Carnival told me this although I inquired thru guest svc. with much differing answers.

we had a smooth cruise with a 50.00 dep which was refundable as long as there were no damages.

Sorry Carnival, but we must help each other once we find out you won't.

Enjoy!

We went on our first cruise ( and not our last) and my buddy ended up with gout before we got on the ship (Glory). We were in line and a carnival employee came up to us( a party of 4) and asked if we wanted a wheelchair. We took her up on the offer and she escorted us through the lines very fast and we were on the ship. There they had a ship wheelchair for Keith to get into and allowed him to use it all week free even using it in ports all the way.

Now we are deciding who will have the gout next year!

The problem is that this is not guaranteed. There are a limited number of wheelchairs on board and some are available to rent or borrow should they not need them for others. Even if you have one, if they need it for a passenger who was injured on-board, then they will request that you return it. For example, there was a lady on our Destiny cruise last month who slipped on a wet deck near one of the hot tubs and she had the use of the wheelchair for the rest of the cruise. If you do not have a condition that was created by a medical emergency on-board, they have no requirement to provide you with the wheelchair.

One morning, we were waiting for our group to disembark at a port and I needed a place for my 81 yo father to sit down while waiting for the rest of our group. We were near the infirmary and I asked to borrow their wheelchair and they told me that I could use it for a short while, but I could not leave the vicinity of the infirmary with it because they had too many wheelchairs out. I asked about the policy for borrowing wheelchairs and they told me that there were enough injured passengers that they might have to request wheelchairs be returned.

If you really need the wheelchair, you would do better to make your own arrangements to have one rented for your specific use.

I checked on this recently thru Carnival. I was inquiring for an October cruise on which my husband may need a wheelchair. I was told to bring my own. The wheelchairs on the ships are there for people who were hurt on the ship not for people to rent. I think Carnival should give this some thought as there should be a better policy in place. Renting them thru the ship for the week is a lot easier than bringing them from home.

My brother went through a company (in Florida) that rents not only wheelchairs but also the scooters. He decided on a scooter being that it would give him more mobility and no one in our party would have to push him. It will be delivered right to his stateroom and then picked up at the end of the cruise. I will talk with my brother and find out which company he used and post back here when I have that information.

The other posters are correct when they say that the ships wheelchairs are not for general use or for rent. It states this on the Carnival website under the Special Needs section of the Q & A.

She had no problems using a wheelchair the entire week (Miracle Jan 2006) other than not being as fun. :( We took her into port wtih it as well. When they got to the port, they immediately got one and this got them on the ship in front of many others. Of course, reading this post, i think the scooter sounds better giving some independence, etc.

We took my mother out of Galveston a few years back and Carnival provided a wheelchair at port (large size) and it was to be returned at port upon returning. there was no charge for this, just a $50 deposit on there sail and sign account until it was returned.. Just remember the larger size chairs are wider and have a hard time fitting through some doors on the ship.

I would defenetly call the port authorities where you are departing and check into it before you rent one for a week.

Do NOT count on anyone in San Diego port for the Elation to help you with regards to wheelchairs. Despite our PVP stating we would have no problem getting one just to get my husband on board, there was not one single Carnival employee that knew anything about wheelchairs except to say "NO, we don't have them". A couple of years ago at the same port for a RCCL cruise, the RCCL employees came up to us when they saw he had trouble walking and offered a wheelchair ride up to our cabin. Made the whole trip much more enjoyable.

There are several companies that rent wheelchairs and deliver them to the ship. I think the name of one of them is Care Vacations. The folks over on the Disabled Cruise Travel should have more information if you can't find it with this name.
