Red Hook:things to do

We are doing a stop at Brooklyn Red Hook for the day on a repositioning cruise. Have been to NYC many times in past so looking for interesting things to do in the area of the Red Hook terminal. Any suggestions?

Do tour operators hang out in this area? On the website it looks pretty bleak in the surrounding area. Appreciate any help.

DO NOT wander in red hook if you are looking for fun. Terrible area.

Nonesense this was true 10 years ago. It is perfectly safe to walk down Van Brundt street to the end by Fairway. The crew walks down to a bar on a parrellel street and has a great time. It is as safe as the area around 12th avenue in Manhattan.

also from Chrislynn55

We were just in Red Hook for a cruise on the QM2....not a chance I would consider walking anywhere outside the fenced parking lot! Either stay on the ship or take the short cab ride through the Battery Tunnel into Manhattan and see some sights there.

Nonsense this was true 10 -15 years ago. It is perfectly safe to walk down Van Brunt street to the end by Fairway. Walk down to the end of Van Brunt going to Fairway and have a coffee at the cafe at the back and sit in the cafe with absolute best view of NY and the statue of Liberty. The crew walks down to a bar on a side street and has a great time. It is as safe as the area around 12th avenue in Manhattan. Stop off at Lenell's for a free drink of the month....

If you want walk to the pier were they sell Key lime pies(look it up on the web). Most NY ers who are afraid of this area don't go into Manhattan either and haven't been to Brooklyn in 20 years.

The piers that made it unsafe(as in Shanghai unsafe) closed down at the end of world war 2.

You can stroll around Red Hook on Van Brunt, and the key lime pie place is called Steve's, on a pier off of Van Dyke street. The chocolate dipped frozen key lime tarts are amazing! Red Hook is not unsafe, but it is still up and coming. I live not too far from the pier in Carroll Gardens, which is a beautiful neighborhood. Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill all have historic homes and tasty restaurants, as well as some unique shops to visit. You can walk over (kind of a long walk) or take a cab to the intersections of Smith Street and Union Street or Court Street and Union Street (probably about $3.50-$4.00 for the ride) and explore. Brooklyn Heights is also beautiful and nearby, and the views of lower Manhattan from the promenade are amazing. You can find a bit of information at http://www.nyc.gov/html/nextstopnyc/html/neighborhoods/brooklyn_heights_main.shtml, and you can visit chowhound or other boards for restaurant recommendations. Brooklyn is lovely, and quite different from Manhattan.
