My coworker just told me that New Orleans crime rate is up and was wondering is it safe to stay a night there and I just want a decent motel to sleep in one nite for a family of four. Any ideas? What part is ok to go wondering around and are there motels nearby the cruise terminal. Any help would be nice. Thanks

It's fine. Crime is high over there but you wont be in that area. Stay at the end of Canal near the River and you;ll be fine. Hilton, Mariott, Dollar Tree, they are all pricey but it's not worth my life I say. The last time we went we even stayed even with Bourbon but across the street and we were always told that was a NO NO. As many times as I've been to N.O. I've never had anything happen. Keep your guard up and stay near the French Market (near the River right there) or by the mall and you'll be okay. One thing is to park your car and don't drive anywhere. Parking is a pain the arse............:)

Have always Hotwired hotels in New Orleans. Recently got the Sheraton downtown, 4 star for $79 dollars. French Quarter is also a nice zone to get good rate at, last time got the Wyndam in the French quarter for $95 a night. I almost always use Hotwire for pre and post cruise hotel stays, as I am not picky about exact hotel, since we will only be there for a night or two. But I have never been dissapointed with what I get from them. Check it out.

I just looked that one up and it looks like it's on the corner of St. Peters and Julia. It looks like it's almost across from the Riverwalk so it should be safe. Those tourist areas aren't riddled with much crime it's the other places that have yet to be re-built since Katrina. Don't get me wrong there have been senseless murders here but just use common-sense and PLEASE park your car somewhere. Either with the hotel or with the cruise line:D

I go to hotwire.com and just key in new orleans and type four stars and is that what you did?

We stayed at the Renaissance Pere Marquette, one block off of Canal, two blocks from Bourbon, in March. It was a nice hotel...but parking was outrageous!

I felt safe...I walked alone from the hotel several times at night to meet DH and his co-workers on Bourbon Street, they were covering the NCAA tournament games being held there. However, it might have been just an illusion....almost all of the people down in that area were there to watch the basketball games. Had I felt unsafe at any time, all I had to do was look around, find the nearest blue shirt and yell "Go Tigers!" and voila! Instant friends who I could walk back and forth with while we discussed Coach Cal and how Memphis needs to work on their free throws.

I have the feeling it was a very different city the next weekend when we all left.

Go to Hotwire.com, then go to hotels, type in New Orleans, enter in your dates and how many people you need the room for. It will then list all available hotels in all areas of New Orleans. You'll then be able to narrow down the search based on city area you want. It will show a small map and the areas will be labeled. Un-check the areas you don't want. For New Orleans, if you are cruising, Downtown, French Quarter, and Convention Center should get you pretty close. I usually have it then sort by star rating so I can compare prices. The nice thing about Hotwire compared to Priceline, is that you see the exact price (minus taxes, which of course vary from location). You will see the exact hotel you got after you purchase.

Just checked and a 4* in the French Quarter is up for $53 the night before my cruise on 10/01. (I'm already booked though)

Love Hotwire for hotels. Haven't used it that much for air though. Good luck, and if you use it, let me know what you get!

Yes, crime is up in New Orleans, but NOT in tourist areas. French Quarter, Downtown (Canal Street) and Garden District are very safe areas. I am a fan of the Riverwalk Hilton, can't get any closer to the pier.

The hotels on Canal Street in general are the closest.

I think the poster above who mentioned Dollar Tree meant Doubletree.

If you go to the ports of call section you will find some threads on this subject.

Of course crime was bad before Hurricane Katrina, but as a New Orleans native, I understand your concern. The tourist areas and the area around the cruise terminal are relatively safe. As safe as any big city would be. I echo the sentiment of a lot of posters in this thread when they speak about the parking. I would park at the lot Carnival recommends which is in close proximity to the cruise terminal.

Most people are not going to venture into the bad neighborhoods anyway as the French Quarter and other attractions are centrally located. You shouldn't worry too much. Just be smart and you will be safe.

I just stayed there 2 months ago. That was my first N.O trip since the storm. This hotel is at 300 Bourbon st. It is seven storys high (All red brick) and takes up an entire block!! This hotels rooms befour the storm went for $250.00 to $350.00 a night!! The whole inside of the hotel is marbel and a good part of your room was also not to mention your 42in FLAT screen tv in all rooms!!!. I booked this room online at a discount travel agent for $100.00 plus taxes per night..So well worth it..Walking distance to everywhere!! Police are all over the French Quarter..In my opinion there is NO PLACE safer in New Orleans right now then where this hotel is located..It's very touristy and the police have been told to keep it safe(and they do!)after all the Quarter is all the N.O has left for the tourist$$ I would recommend it to my own mother!! Good luck and have a great cruise..:)

Does anyone have any ideas for hotels in NO that you get parking for the duration free?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn French Quarter on Sept. 7 and paid $129 for an upgraded room w/ covered parking for up to 7 days. It is on Royal street only 2 blocks from Bourbon street and real close to where they have the parades. Walgreen's is on the corner. They also have transfer service which is $15/person there and back including luggage transfer. It sounded like a lot... so we took a cab. Let me tell you... I think the transfer would have been better. All total we paid more for the taxi... even when we shared it with another couple on the way back. It cost more for 1.9 miles in NO, than it did in Cozumel for 15 km. Go figure!

We had a great stay there though! Great room!

So far, several of my favorites have been mentioned, but this one hasn't. It's a little boutique hotel called Le Pavillion ... (leh pah-vee-ohn). Was right in the convention center area, a 5 minute taxi ride from the port. We can't say about parking, because we didn't have a car with us ... flew in and then took cab ... but they do have free midnight snacks (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, hot chocolate, punch, chips, and cookies) in the lobby, gorgeous high ceilings and HUGE closets in the rooms ... and it's right next door to a fantastic steakhouse with awesome homemade chocolate ice cream.

From Le Pavillion we walked to the trolley to go to the garden district, short walk to the Riverwalk or the French Quarter ... it was a great location. (Cheap, too ... I think we paid $65/night on Travelocity ... and that was at the beginning of Mardi Gras) I'd also recommend a little bed and breakfast called "A Hotel the Frenchman" ... it's 2 blocks from the old US Mint, right off the French Quarter and a very short walk to Cafe DuMonde for Cafe Au Lait and Beignets!

I love the Hotel Monteleone, right in the French Quarter. I thought it was very safe and felt comfortable walking around there. The only downside is that they charge $30 per day for parking!

I second that! I stayed there in 2003 for my best friend's wedding and it is gorgeous! It has a rooftop pool and excellent service. Royal Street has alot of interesting art galleries. I walked throughout the FQ by myself in the daytime and in the early evening. We all went to Bourbon St at night as a group. I never felt unsafe. I don't recall the parking situation as I flew into MSY and took a shuttle to the Quarter from the airport. My friend got a whole block of rooms for around 100.00/night, but that was in Aug. 4 years ago. It is probably significantly higher now, but a fantastic hotel nonetheless.

I also recommend La Pavillion. (side fact- They have Napolean's bathtub.) It's very convenient to the cruise terminal.

My parents always stayed in the Drury Inn (across the street from La Pavillion) when they visited us when my husband and I were students there and they highly recommend it.

Additionally, any of the hotels on St Charles in the Garden District will be perfectly safe. Its a longer cab ride than it would be from the Quarter, but not very far and the Garden District is just beautiful.

We got a hotel through Harrah's Casino, I think it was a Double Tree, but we parked in Harrah's garage for the duration of the cruise w/harrah's players card and we stayed one night upon return from cruise. Maybe they can get you under $100. As for the parking you had to show 30 mins of play at that time. Been a few years, but worth checking it out.

This just came out on Travelzoo. If someone's cruise falls within these dates....it might give them a price break.

As for crime, just use common sense. Stay in well travel areas with lots of light (even in the Quarter) no short cuts or alleys.

At the risk of repeating myself, when the Conquest and Sensation sailed from NO, it had 10 times the normal violent crime rate.....one of the top in the nation .... and no one cared. It is still New Orleans and still a lot of fun.

Just use common sense!!
