Traveler's checks questions

Recommended Posts

Hi, we're sailing on the Pearl next week and this time we're using cash for everything. Will the purser accept X amount in traveler's checks for our account? Also, will either the purser or other front desk personnel cash traveler's checks for us?

I feel silly asking such a simple question as we usually "charge" it, but I'm enjoying zero balances these days and want to keep it that way:D . DH suggested calling NCL direct with these questions and I told him that's a crap shoot, will get far better info here;) .

Thanks for your replies!

Happy Sails!

What if you do not have a credit card to secure your account?

Good question Messenger, I suppose in that case they'd have to take cash.

I'll give them my credit card for embarkation but will pay cash at the end, personal mission these days NOT to mess up my 0 balance.

I'm with ya on that...been working too hard for too many years to get to where I am at and do not want to get back where I was. I would just assume to pay up front in cash and pay the balance in cash...no problem with handing them enough to cover my cruise extras. I do not plan on skimping on anything I want (for the wife either), but, I would just as well pay the purser a grand up front and settle at the end.

Ditto Messenger, I'm done "payin' the Man"! Been there too, it's pretty liberating to come home and not break out in a sweat opening the credit card statement!

Have a GREAT cruise! (looks like you're right behind me, I'll leave the light on for ya)!

Yes, I already called ahead. Although, I do have an emergency card in hand. I plan on settling up in cash. I have paid for Motel, Cruise and plane tickets in cash (debit card). We just plan on giving the purser a $1000 up front and if we spend more than that then we will pay the balance at the end. Only 5 days so I hope we can get by. BUT, as I stated in earlier posts, this is a vacation (first in several years besides going to the next state), our first real honeymoon my birthday (Oct 18th);

SO, we plan to enjoy ourselves.

Thanks,

If memory serves, I believe that there is a desk set up for people who are depositing cash, instead of using credit cards when you check in.

That's good to know Chris, I may just "leave home with out it";) .

Thanks!

Yeah, Romy, I noticed that. We are on deck 10. First cruise and all....it is going to be great. And, don't forget to post your cruise in here. Look forward to hearing about it, since it is the cruise right before ours on the Pearl.

Wow, you're in for such a treat. Way to pick an almost brand new ship for the first time! Our first was practically a fossil;)!

I plan to do a review shortly after we return. This will be our first balcony, and I feel like a kid at Christmas!

They may ask you to give them an additional deposit once you've used up that $1000 - and then they'll settle with you by giving you back anything left over at the end of the cruise. I'd suggest keeping an eye on your account, else you might find yourself with your account shutdown and unable to charge anything until you go to the front desk and give them more money (it happened to us).

Misuse of words on my part. We have travelers checks to cover in case we spend more. Will check every couple of days to settle up as needed. Can't believe we are at the two week countdown.

We are staying in Miami the night before and will disembark and spend another night in Miami before flying back to Kentucky.

To think we were gonna spend a week in Memphis before we stumbled onto cruisin'....Just decided to take the plunge (pardon the pun).

Thanks,

Yes you can, just make sure they are in US dollars.

Travelers checks are becoming less and less used these days. Why not just carry the $1,000 in cash? A lot less hassle.

#1 Because we're taking considerably more than that.

#2 I don't feel comfortable carrying that kind of cash to be lost or stolen.

I have to agree carrying the traveler's checks is indeed a bit of a hassle, however, considering the alternatives, I think it's worth it.

Thanks,

Romy:)

Thanks for starting this thread. I've been doing searches on travelers checks because I'd rather carry those than a lot of cash as well.

Does anyone know if there's a fee to cash them in at the casino and if so, how much the fee is?

-Q

Good question Queen, It's been so long since I've used them, I'm not sure, but wouldn't be at all surprised if there is a minimal fee.

That's just asking to have your vacation ruined IMHO!

I guess I am confused??

We take multiple trips a year and often have 1-2k with us. People ask if we are worried about being robbed with that much money on us. My question back, is "How would somebody KNOW if you have $10 or $10,000 on you?" Meaning, you are no more likely to be robbed with a little or alot of cash.

Getting lost I suppose is a concern. Just have not thought about that.

Yes, a pickpocket doesn't know how much cash have on you. But, I think it is generally recognized that tourists are "more likely" to be robbed. Pickpockets specifically hang around tourist attractions!

Also, if you lose $1-2K, it seems to me that would affect my vacation a lot more than losing $100 ;)! And of course with traveler's checks you can get your money back... with cash you are s-o-l! Seems to me that is worth a bit of inconvenience!
