Non Smoking Areas on Carnival??

Forgive me for asking, I don't want this thread to turn nasty. Our family is non smoking. We cruised on the Paradise last spring break and it was the perfect vacation.

We are thinking of the Legend this spring break but now will have to deal with smoking issues. How do they handle that in the dining rooms? How about on the decks? Will it be a smoke filled vacation?

How about cabins. Do they have specific smoking and non smoking ones? Nothing worse than smelling stale smoke in a hotel room.

Please, no nasty replies. I have nothing against smokers, I just don't want to be around 2nd hand smoke. Please respect that.

The Legend is one of the nicest ships in the fleet.

There is no smoking in the dining room, buffet or Golden Fleece specialty restaurant or in the show lounges. Some smaller lounges do allow smoking. One side of the Lido deck is designated non-smoking and it is limited as to which decks are smoking when outside. There are no non-smoking cabins, but they are usually cleaned so well between sailings that you probably won't know if the previous occupant smoked or not. Smoking is allowed in the casino and the cigar lounge is an open space just outside the doors to the dining room.

Your Capers will list the designated smoking areas so you might be able to avoid them.

I keep hearing that the Legend is awesome. We loved the Paradise, which I guess is on the "older" side, so I'm sure the Legend will be super impressive.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully our room won't smell like smoke. My youngest daughter is asthmatic and very sensitive to it. Geez, I should tell my DH that we need to book a balcony so we can get the fresh air. LOL!

On Victory the amount of smoke was simply awful. There was a message in the daily newletter that started with "The Victory is primarly a non smoking ship except for..." followed by a list of basically every room on the ship except for the dining areas and the 2 largest showrooms. Smoking is not suppose to be permitted in corridors and hallways, it's only suppose to be permitted in designated lounges and on one side of the open decks and pool areas. This simply wasn't the case and the result was that smoke everywhere to the point it effected my enjoyment of the cruise.

Upon exiting the main showroom the air was a haze of smoke even though you weren't suppose to smoke there (floors 4 and 5). In the public rooms having both smoking and non-smoking areas there was no enforcement. Smokers would often sit in the middle of the non-smoking areas, remove the non-smoking signs and light up. All outside decks areas were used by smokers no matter their designations. People smoked in the hallways by the cabins and elevators, and because the design of the ventilation system people smoking in their cabins would end up smelling up the hallways outside their rooms.

The only time I saw enforcement of the non-smoking rules was in the hottubs in the gym spa when someone tried lighting up in there, and even then it think it was because the person had an unlit cigarette in their month and asked for an ashtray.

A couple of times I did approach people smoking where they shouldn't (on the open deck areas with the non-smoking signs for example), the smokers would usually simple move 1 or 2 tables over and the staff would do nothing or just shrug their shoulders when I asked.

There was no escaping the smoke on this cruise, it was terrible and a huge disappointment. I've been on 11 cruises, this last one on Victory was the worst. In general I find people on a cruise ship light up in places they wouldn't normally in say, a hotel on land. For Carnival to say this was "primarly a non-smoking" ship was a farce and the smoking so predominate and tollerated that I'd have a hard time recomending this ship, or actually any Carnival ship, to anyone who is sensitive to smoke.

Since Carnival has aboandoned the Paradise, it's time to consider giving us non-smoking cabins, more non-smoking signs in areas with that have the designation anyways, and at least something resembling a minimum amount of enforcement.

Boy, that is so true. Now you have me all worried. I don't like being around smoke at all.

Our cruise director was Josh on the Paradise and on our last day, he encouraged everyone to talk to Carnival about getting a non smoking ship back. He said having smoking areas and non-smoking areas is like having a "no peeing section" in a swimming pool. LOL!!! You could tell the crew was bummed about making it a smoking ship.

We have never had an issue with smoking on a ship. We were on the Triumph with our children and both have issues with cigarette smoke. They were both fine all week. The rooms never smelt of smoke. The only places it was bad was the cigar lounge and the casino. we never went in them. The deck was great. Smoking allowed on one side. The crew was great about inforcing it.

Have a great trip!!

I'm a smoker and have to say over the last couple of cruise I have noticed an improvement in no-smoking areas. (More of the ships area has been turned over to no-smoking.) I have also never noticed anyone smoking in the Dining Room or bad smells in the cabin. :)

My only wish is that they would change the smoking side of the ship on the Lido deck to match the other floors. (Which tends to cause confusion for smokers where on the lower decks most bars and smoking areas are on the port side but on the Lido its the starboard.)

It can be alot more hit and miss if your on a 3 or 4 day cruise or travelling over the school breaks. (Seems the more people who are drinking the more smoke and the more likely to meet an inconsiderate smoker.) :(

I think as Paradise proved until such time as no-smokers are prepared to vote with their wallets there will not be a no-smoking ship. Yes many sailed the Paradise and had a wondeful time but it was also one of the highest discounted ships in the fleet because Carnival were unable to fill it regularly. (I would hardly then say Carnival abandoned it!)

Actually, that's not true at all. It sold as many cabins as any other ship. They just found that non-smokers were also less likely to gamble and drink. That's where they lost money.

For ROBSVACATION,

This same exact thing happened to us last Sept.2003 on the Glory. Nobody enforced the no smoking and people smoked wherever they wanted too. We couldn't enjoy our outside cabin as everybody smoked. Threw cigarrettes overboard so We had cigarrete ashes on our chairs and from the cabins on both sides, passengers would stand by their railing and cigarette smoke would drift into our balcony space.. So We got no use out of it. People should be able to smoke but a little consideration for non-amokers would be appreciated too. This time We are going on Legend and took an inside cabin. Why waste our money.. Wrote Carnival and told them of our disappointment and I was told to try their non-smoking ship"Paradise" which We did twice. However, wanted a change of itinerary and then why should We be punished.

All it takes is a little consideration of all passengers. It seems today, many people donot like to follow "RULES".....Ike

I too am sensative to smoke and had no problem at all on the Sensation in August. The only time I noticed smoking was in the Casino - and to me, that should be expected. Mind you, we did not go dancing at 2AM either so maybe that was worse - but by morning the smoke was gone!

Regarding the Victory- The dining room is non smoking but they put that cigar bar across the hall from the dining room. To me that was crazy- Im a smoker and thought that to be in poor thought.

Also there were ashtrays located outside the doors of the show lounge--so of course people thought it ok to smoke there standing at the door. Ashtrays located at the elevator banks too.

I think of Cruise Lines as big casinos... Made for the over 21 croud and all their nasty habits:

Sun Bathing half naked at pool and on balconies  , morning cocktails, gambling, smoking, cigars, adult only shows, afternoon cocktails, more shows, Formal nights, singles meeting and getting together, HoneyMooners  , Gyms, Spas, evening cocktails.

Our 1st cruise was on the Paradise too and I was very concerned about the smoking on my Glory cruise last month. Especially since it was such a BIG ship and I expected alot of smokers. But I was quite surprised to find that the smoking was not much of a problem at all. Our rooms did not smell of smoke at all. The casino was the only place where it really bothered me.
