Those little(?) extra charges.....

Can anyone tell me where I can find out about all the little, and not-so-little, extra, but required, charges added to the cruise ticket price....you know, those annoying port charges and taxes, etc? Sometimes those ticket prices can look real attractive, but you have to consider those extras, too. In my case, a NCL cruise from Charleston to Bermuda. I'm sure they are posted somewhere, but I couldn't find them.

Just go to the NCL website and simulate booking the cruise you are looking at. A final & total price including all taxes, port charges, fuel surcharge, and even insurance if you wish, will be given out.

You then have to add the $10/day/person auto-tip and that's it other than items of a personal nature (excursions, drinks, etc)

We're taking the same Majesty cruise, Charleston to Bermuda in May. Here are the pricing facts in our case (this is an inside cabin, for two people:)

Guest Fare: 978.00

Government Taxes/Fees: 233.82

Total: 1,211.82

I assume the taxes and fees are the same per person, no matter what you pay for the cabin. If you are taking more than two people in a cabin, they addional people will pay the same taxes and fees as you do. We got about the least expensive cabin, so factor in any cabin upgrade.

Also not included in the above: mandatory $70 per adult service charge(which eliminates the customary gratuity.) Parking at the Port of Charleston is $110 for the week, parking details are here.

There will be a need from small amounts of cash for room service and porters, things you are going to do, buy, and eat in port, and of course donations to the casino need cash.

You won't need cash for things you purchase on the ship - that all gets charged to your onboard account and you settle up when the credit card bill arrives a month later (unless you opt for a cash or debit card account.)

So overall, the "cruise fare" says relatively little about how much the cruise costs.

Hope this helps!

we "took care" of a maitre'd or two with cash at the specialty restaurants when there was no availability... amazing what the all-mighty American dollar or 20 can get done for you, so consider this as well into your budget.

if it isnt food or simple liquids (water, coffee, iced tea) then its probably going to cost you some money...

also, they advertised (but I didn’t do this) that you could get a casino line of credit charged to your onboard account, and therefore on your credit card... as an alternative to carrying lots of cash onboard.

I think if you put casino money on your sign 'n sail card they charge a percent for the "convenience." I know Princess wanted 3 percent but I can't remember for sure of NCL was the same. I'm sure if you ask the question, someone will know that has been on NCL lately.

Tucker in Texas

I did it last week on the Dawn and wasn't charged a fee. It was a minimum $100.00 though. I don't think there was a minimum when I was on the Jewel in March, so I'm not sure if that part is the same fleet wide.
