Can I bring anything on my cruise to donate to Grenada?

I'll be cruising on the Golden Princess September 19th southern caribbean itinerary. Our first stop is Barbados. I'm wondering if I can bring anything along to donate to the families on Grenada. Of course I wouldn't be able to bring anything very heavy like canned foods, but I certainly could make room in my suitcase for some extra clothing. Does anyone have any leads on this?

Smooth sailing to all....

Thanks

Call the Red cross - they have a disaster relief fund/international response fund. Their number is 1-800-HELP NOW

They will have assessed the situation and know exactly what the locals need and can provide the best assistance.

Have deen involved in the Red Cross off and on for years. They are overall a really fine organization.

I think the Red Cross is a great organization. In fact I have donated my time during several different tragic times such as the Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco in 1990 and the terrible fires in the Ventura area several years later. I also donate my time every Christmas wrapping presents in the mall.

But I really wanted to do something more personal. I think in addition to donating time and money to the Red Cross, I will be taking a few new items with me. Perhaps a few bathing suits, or some childrens clothing. It's a great time of year to buy these things new at the local stores. Summer wear is all on sale. Then I will leave them with someone in Barbados or St Lucia. Maybe a police officer or someone in an official capacity.

I'm sure any help at all will be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Jan I appreciate your sense of charity, but don't you think it may be an imposition on the person in Barbados or St Lucia to have to take your package to a post office and pay to have it sent to Grenada? What if everyone did that? What a mess. If you really want to send swimwear to Grenada, it would probably be better if you mail it from here before you go. There's a reason that charities ask for money -- it's a lot easier to distribute and can be used more effectively. Not trying to throw water on your idea, just trying to be realistic.

I hadn't really thought of that. But I did hear somewhere that many things that would be donated would be routed through Barbados. I will certainly play anything that I try by ear. I certainly don't want to inconvenience anyone...

Sue, you must have been posting at the same time I was, because I wasn't aware of the bank post until I revisited the thread. Sounds like a good idea.

JanT, I understand wanting to do something personal to help -- I admire the thought and wish you luck in finding the right thing to do.

- Sxm Red Cross & Seventh Day Adventists Church Collection Points for Grenada Relief

From: "Roddy Heyliger - MEDPRO - PR & Communications" <heylrody AT sintmaarten.net>

The St. Maarten Red Cross and the Seventh Day Adventists Church are acting as collection points for relief items for the people of Grenada. Monetary donations are being accepted at RBTT Bank on St. Maarten.

A container of relief materials was already tentatively scheduled to leave the island today.

The Red Cross Brigades on the islands of Saba and St. Eustatius are also collecting relief materials for the people of Grenada.

I heard that a contingent of the St. Maarten Red Cross won't be deploying to Grenada as was anticipated, however they will be on standby to go to Jamaica. Red Cross Brigades in the Southern Caribbean will focus on Grenada while other brigades in the Northern and Western Caribbean will focus on Jamaica.

Residents have also been sensitized to be prepared to assists Jamaica with respect to relief items.

Jan T -- there has to be a special place in heaven for people as kind as you.

No matter what you end up doing or how, I am sure it will be appreciated by some deserving soul.

You are moving from thought to action and have inspired me to do the same.

Jan T,

I actually think that as long as the items are new, or in excellent condition, the police officers would be more than willing to accept them for those in need. If not for those in Grenada, there are always local families in unfortunate situations who benefit from a helping hand.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments.

I just can't imagine being in a place where a bad hurricane passes. I get very nervous when we have tornado warnings here! I just can't imagine what these people are going through.

And yes, I do think that someone will find use for anything that any of us can bring.

God bless us all, but especially those still in the path of Ivan.

We were due to visit Grenada on our 9/26 Golden cruise. We are so sorry for the people of Grenada who have lost everything.

A travel company in the UK has set up a fund for people here to donate money which will then be sent on to the relief organisations. We were happy to send a donation and hope that others do the same. I was so glad to see that someone here was trying to help in some small way.

The company concerned is a travel company specialising in Caribbean holidays. They are a Bonded company (ATOL 5615) - Tropic Breeze Limited.

This is what they say:

Right now, Grenada needs all the help she can get. There is no water,

electricity or food. 90% of homes are reported to be damaged or

destroyed. To this end, in the absence of an alternative fund we have

set up an account. If you would like to assist the regeneration efforts

as a consequence of Ivan, please send a cheque made payable to Tropic

Breeze Ltd - Regeneration Account - to us at Tropic House, Stoke Rd,

Noss Mayo, Plymouth, PL8 1DY UK - we guarantee that every penny or cent

received will be passed on to the relief agencies in Grenada.

I believe other funds are now being set up in the UK too, but I have already sent my donation to Tropic Breeze.

Hope this is of help.
