Back from Mexican Riviera on the Pride -- any questions?

We just got back on Sunday from our Mexican Riviera cruise on the Pride. We had such a great time, and the information I got from these boards was so helpful. So now I'm wondering if anyone has any questions that I can help with. Here's a quick run down of what we did:

PV: Los Veranos zip line, walked along the Malecon (boardwalk), Senor Frogs

Mazatlan: Stone Island -- ate at Victor's and rented ATV's on the beach

Cabo: Parasailing with Caborey, shopping, bucket of beers on the pier (6 for $10!)

Are you going to write a review? Did you eat at the supper club? Was the water slide open everyday? Anything you noticed cosmetic done to the ship after drydock? I read it was real windy on a sea day back, bad in your opinion? Anything else you would like to add would be appreciated. We leave this sunday..........New years cruise!!!!!!!!:)

I’m not sure if I’ll write an official review in time for your cruise, but I can certainly answer your questions.

We did not eat at the supper club. We don’t typically eat at the specialty restaurants on the ships because we really enjoy the dining room. The food on the ship was great. It was our first time on Carnival and we were not disappointed. We ate chocolate melting cake every night. My husband is still talking about it. J

The water slide was not open every day. I think it was open on the two sea days before we got to PV (11:00-5:00 maybe), and limited time when we were in port (I think 3:00-5:00), but on the last sea day (Saturday) it was closed, along with the rest of the upper decks. This was due to high winds. The ship really has to move fast (20+ knots the whole day I believe) in order to get back to Long Beach in time, so I’m not sure if they ever allow access to the upper decks on this day. I wouldn’t count on doing much outside on the last sea day (despite the fact that the Capers will have outside activities listed).

As far as cosmetics on the ship, I’ve never been on the Pride before so I couldn’t really notice anything. They did add the miniature golf course, which we liked, and I heard they added club O2, although we don’t have kids so I don’t really know anything about that. In general we found the ship to be very well-kept and we liked the layout.

Let me know if you have other questions…

Were you lucky enough to see any whales or dolphins from the ship? We leave in 44 days and I can't wait..first time doing this itinerary and we are excited...

We saw some gray whales in Cabo last week on the 21st. We also saw them a few days earlier on our way down to PV (I think on the 18th) while we passed Cabo. We didn't do a whale watching trip -- just saw them on our own while we were on the ship. I overheard some people talking about their whale watching excursion and they said they didn't see any, so I'm not sure I'd book one. They said you'd have about a 50% chance to see them. My advice would be to try to see them while you're on the ship -- especially as you're entering and leaving port.

We loved this itinerary – so relaxing, but still a lot of stuff to do. Have fun!

No, we didn’t use the casino. We’re not big gamblers. We just had an inside stateroom on Verandah deck 7. We also didn’t use Camp Carnival because we don’t have any kids, so I don’t have any feedback on that. They did have a general store on the ship where you could buy toiletries, medicine, etc. (along with t-shirts and other souveniers). The liquor prices in the ship’s store were actually less than what we found in the ports, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re interested in purchasing some.

I’ll try to post some pics later. Things have been crazy since we got back with the holidays, family visiting, etc., so I haven’t had a chance to upload any.

Let me know if you have other questions, and have fun on your cruise!

Thanks for letting me know...we actually have two whale watching excursions booked already...one in Cabo and one in PV...figure what we don't seen in one place we might see in another...let's hope we are luckier than the people you heard talking...after growing up in a town that was once the whaling capital of the world...and only seeing pictures and of course touring the Whaling Museum numerous times, it would be great to actually see these mammals in their natural habitat...:D

I was also on the Dec 16th Pride Sailing from Long Beach.

I also did the Los Veranos zip line (10:40AM), and even walked the boardwalk on the way back to the "Golden Zone". Did some shopping then returned via Wal-Mart! Although I didn't buy any, Kahlua (1L) was about 11 dollars. I did get some diet coke and water bottles though for the ship.

Mazatlan: We took a tour of the city with a friend of Mazatlan Franks. It was just ok. Nothing great.

Cabo: My family took a white van ($7USD) to Hotel ME (Nikki Beach Restaurant ) We had two big "mattress beds with pillows/umbrellas" on the beach. We had lots to drink and had lunch on the beach. Although some had said we would have to pay to use their beach, the bartender just said enjoy the beach (A roped off section for the hotel. It did keep some beach vendors back a bit). We spent $100 including tip for the 5 of us for 4 hours of pleasure.

My wife and I did go to the Supper Club on Friday night. It was nice. We booked late and did not get in until 9 pm Friday. A bit too late. We were almost the only diners left. Honestly though, the main dining room had great food, and I do not think I would bother with the Supper Club next time. On the Celebrity Infinity I took before, the "reservations" dining room was an experience. The waiters presented each course in a correographed display. The food was elegant, and was a cut above the main dining room. In the Supper Club, it was just a smaller dining room. We did not see our waitress enough. By Friday, my wife and I had already been stuffed daily and were not all that hungry.

We did use the "Camp Carnival" once. my kids (10, 13 and 16) were not impressed. This may have because we had the late seating for dinner. If the Camp Carnival is something you would like to use, make sure you have early seating. The Camp Carnival orientation and other events seemed to always conflict with the late (8:15) dining.

Lastly, If you like the ship board activities, I would recommend the early dining (5:45pm). Many grown up activities also are missed by the late seating. If you have the late seating, you have to go to the late "show". it did not start until 10:30 PM. With three port calls in a row, and late dining and activities, my family got tired on the port calls early. With early dining, you can still do ship activities and get to bed earlier if needed.

We are going on the Pride on the 13th. We want to take the daytime Pirate Cruise in PV, but are concerned we won't make it in time. Do you remember what time you actually docked in PV and when they let passengers off the ship? Thanks.

I do not recall the actual time, but it was early. Since tenders were only used in Cabo, there was never a line (that I saw) in PV or Mazatlan. I was able to get a taxi from the ship and get all the way to old town (Los Veranos tour office) by 10AM (PV time, 9AM ship time). Our cruise director made many jokes about the Pirate Cruise in PV (being the afternoon entertainment for those aboard to watch the drunken party ship return :) ). I believe it docked not far from the ship. Should not be an issue making it. With the late departure from PV (per schedule), getting back to the ship should not be an issue.

How was your inside cabin?

Did you wish you had gotten a balcony?

Did you peek into any of the other cabins to compare with what you got?

We are in an inside cabin, and the savings are such that you can use what you save to do fun things in port.

no, we were fine with our inside cabin. we've never had a balcony though, so maybe we don't know what we're missing. we just hardly ever spend any time in the cabin so we almost always book an inside. the balcony cabins always cost so much more. maybe one day we'll get a really nice upgrade to a balcony and get hooked, but unless that happens we probably won't try it out.

Marfa53: I am also on Jan 13th Pride sailing. Going with a group of 60 crazy people who are all in the Haunted House industry. You will see us wearing shirts with Bloody Mary Moonlight Cruise on them (and we will be in costume on the last night of the trip.)

about 20 of us are doing the Marigalante Pirate ship in PV. Book through http://www.puertovallartatours.net/marigalante-pirate-ship.htm ASAP

The Holland American ship Oosterdam is in port the same day we are and their ship offers it as a ship's sponsored excursion for $92 (where if you book on line at puerto vallarta tours it is $72) The tour co assured us it is no trouble getting to the pirate ship if you try and be one of the first ones off the Pride. .(ship time & PV time are diiferent so even if we dock at 8 it is really 9 PV time) The Oosterdam docks the same time we do. They will not leave without the full tour group. The Marigalante is at the same marina the Pride is docked at so you just walk down to the end of the pier & jump aboard.

Hope you decide to go. Look for a bunch of wild people from the Pride, that will be us.

Hi - thanks much for sharing your experiences on the cruise. We are about to book a cruise on Carnival Pride to the Mexican Riviera leaving Feb 10. I'm sure it was colder in December than it will be in February, but how were the temperatures before you got south enough to really warm up? I live in the midwest & I'm having a hard time judging if we should bring sweatshirts or just be ready for the sun. I'm trying to pack as little as possible! Again thanks for your comments!

IndyCanard you wrote "I also did the Los Veranos zip line (10:40AM), and even walked the boardwalk on the way back to the "Golden Zone". Did some shopping then returned via Wal-Mart!"

We want to do the exact same thing...can you tell me what you mean that you returned via Wal-Mart? How did you get back to the pier?

To both Indy and Stacey...what did you wear zip lining? How was the weather? Did you do any tequilla tasting...how exoensive was that? Was the food good there? Any extra information appreciated!!! We will be there in 10 days!

THANKS :)

Since the Los Veranos office is in Puerto Vallarta and the Golden Zone is in Mazatlan that was quite a walk! I think you mean the Malecon, along the waterfront in PV. Or maybe there is a Golden Zone in PV too?? I walked from beyond the far end of the Malecon and it took me about 1 1/2 hours to get back to the ship.

Enjoy,

Ron

Hi there! I can only comment on the zip line clothing. I wore capri's and a tanktop but I went in September and it was pretty warm. Some people wore shorts but I didnt want to having anything riding up because the harness goes between your legs and AROUND your thighs and waist. I was fine.

I will probably wear something very similar this time as it may be cooler in January. Im sure just a tshirt though. And tennis shoes for sure as there is alot of uneven ground.

I'm not even sure if they allow flipflops. I cant remember...it was 2006 when I did the zips in PV the last time.

Last year we did Jamaica ziplines...I wore something very similar and it was warm too!

GOOD LUCK!

I always love to top off my zipline adventure with a massage at Hotel Krystal.

Hi Stacey,

Your activities are exactly what I have in mind for us on our upcoming cruise, I am booking with the Canopy tours . Los Veranous, on Valentines Day, how cool is that. On Feb. 13 , my birthday I would like to go to Stone Island, and in Cabo go parasailing. Any more details would be greatly appreciated. I would like to do Stone Island on our own. What outfit did you use for Cabo for parasailing?

Thanks

Stacey,

We are going to do Stone Island on our own as well in a couple of weeks. We were also planning to go to Victors and maybe rent some ATV's. My question is ... when you were off on the ATV's did you have "stuff" with you that you had to take with your or are there lockers available? Just wondering if I will need to carry the backpack with me while I am riding the ATV. Cant imagine that leaving it on the beach would be a very smart idea! Thanks
