Great Stay @ the Wyndham Old San Juan

A large group of us (49 people) stayed at the Wyndham Hotel on 9/3/04 for two nights prior to going on our 7 day southern cruise from San Juan aboard the Destiny on 9/5/04. I must say, I was a little nervous about my stay after reading all of the negative comments about the hotel. But our stay was absolutely delightful! The first day my group arrived was a little hectic because of all of us trying to cram into the lobby at once. However, the staff at the front desk were all so nice and plesant. The hotel itself is beautiful. The view from the 2nd floor terrace overlooking the street and the port is very nice. The rooms were clean and plenty large enough. The entire staff of the hotel including the front desk, maid, casino, concierge, restaurant, and bellman were all top notch! I would certainly reccommend this hotel to anyone wanting a nice stay in Old San Juan for a short vacation or prior to going on their cruise.

Just as an FYI... if you are a Wyndham by Request member, this hotel is changing over to the Sheraton in January. We were going to stay there in January and that's when they told me of the change. This is the only Wyndham on the island that is changing.

Since I saw a number of negative reviews on this hotel before out recent cruise, I did want to tell you of our good experience with the Sheraton. Here is a link to my review as posted on our cruise Roll Call board. As I recall our rooms were $140 (plus taxes) at the peak of high season. They are a good $100 less than anything we found on the Condado etc. My sister got them through her travel agent and I think were based on AAA discount.

I am glad to see that others have had a good experience. We stayed there in July post cruise and had a wonderful room. We had booked a concierge floor but when we got there they had upgraded us to a beautiful suite that was absolutely huge. We had a key to the conceirge room so that we could go up for cocktails that evening and breakfast the next morning. The valet recommended a lovely little restaurant for us.

The only negative was that they were very busy at checking. With 3 ships sailing on Sunday, there were tons of people trying to check out as we arrived. So it did take a while to get our bags checked so we could explore.

For all those who are interested in staying here - priceline has not been giving many deals in San Juan lately - most deals are close enough (within $10-$20) of what you would pay booking on the internet directly with the hotel. But, I found a website that helps you with figuring out what hotel you are getting through Hotwire before you actually purchase it (Betterbidding.com) and if you put in San Juan, it will come up with 3 hotels - the 3 star it comes up with (the second choice that doesn't mention anything about beach or near beach) was priced at $84 about a week or so ago - it just recently went up to $140, but it goes up and comes down regularly - so just check every couple days - and when it comes back down to $84 - it's a heck of a deal.

I just stayed at the Sheraton OSJ on 2/19/05. I thought it was a great place to stay. I only paid $140 on Travelocity and felt it was a great deal. They gave us the 9th floor room 931 (I think). It had a great view of the peir and all the cruise ships from the balcony. It was a great location that enabled us to walk ALL of OSJ.

We were just there at the Sheraton Old San Juan on Feb 12th and found the room to be pretty good. The bed was so cushy with the pillowtop mattress with trendy hotel chic linen (eg, down pillows & duvets). The bathroom was large. We had a view of the water and the pier and the location was wonderful. However, I had to stand in line to check-in twice. The first time they didn't have any rooms ready. We would certainly go back.

We also had heard many bad comments on this hotel prior to our recent pre-cruise stay. We couldn't have had an nicer stay. We stayed there on 2/10/05 and 2/11/05. We found the hotel to be very clean, our room was excellant, the bed was wonderful (hated to leave it for a cruise ship bed) and the service was friendly. We didn't really use the hotel's restaurant so can't comment on that. This hotel was perfect for our purpose and we would probably stay there again. If you want to be on the beach, this isn't your best choice, but if you want to wander around Old San Juan and eat at the local restaurants this is a good choice.
