Star Princess - MUTS?

I was just looking at the 2009 Alaska brochure (downloaded) on their website and noticed that it had the Sanctuary on there like it is supposed to get and it also showed Movies Under The Stars in the same location as it is on the Grand. I did not think they would be adding it as last I heard they changed their mind so I was wondering if it was a misprint or if they decided to do it again or not?

Rats - I was hoping that it was all a nasty rumor...of course the Princess deck plans show Dawn Princess with MUTS too and she doesn't have it.

I wonder if that means this is her last Alaska season. Seems silly to put an outside theater on a ship that spends half its year - or more if you count South America - in cold water. I wonder how much Princess will raise fares to offset the lack of use this thing is going to get if they don't keep the ship in Mexico and the Caribbean? Certainly they can't tout MUTS on a cruise ship that's going past the South Pole.

But then they could show "The March of the Penguins" ;)

We can only hope that they've made the mechanism a bit more attractive than the one retrofitted onto Grand. That just looks out of place.

I bet dollars to donuts that it's just as hideous...somebody at Princess isn't thinking.

Brian.. Both the Golden and the Star will be doing 19 seven day round trip Alaska cruises from Seattle starting May 2009.. The Sea Princess will be doing the SF round trip to Alaska..

Right - I guess I should have said that (meaning 2009) would be her last season. I guess I just can't see the selling point of Movies Under the Stars, Freezing Rain and Frigid Wind.

I think it was the Calypso Pool that has a cover that can be closed. I was sitting with friends last December in that area several times, but am guessing at the name of the pool. After spending over a month on this ship in the past, you would think my memory would be better. But I tend to confuse the names as they are different on each ship.

Calypso Pool is covered - the Conservatory area - and still will be according to the plan.

Dismissing the addtion of MUTS, it is interesting what they are doing with Crown Grill - it will be on Fiesta Deck (deck 6) on the port side. The new suites will be on the same deck on the starboard side. The casino will be on Promenade Deck (deck 7) where the steakhouse currently is - it looks like there is a passageway so that people won't have to traverse the casino to get to and from Princess theater...I think it really Carnival-like to force people to walk through the casino.

Nothing from the deck plan about the new atrium features. But MUTS is on the deck plan in the same location as on Grand Princess. Poor Star Princess.

Well, above you wondered if they would raise the fares to pay for the non-used MUTS. Maybe this is their way to raise some revenue. LOL

Of course, it's not really a big difference. With the casino on Fiesta, half the people who leave the Theater still go that way and end up in the casino. Now it's just flip flopped.

I for one hope it is true that MUTS will be added to the Star. We are on the Star June 09 to ALaska. In April 07 we did 14 day on the Sea Princess. My DH & I loved MUTS we were there almost everynight. It was one of our favorite things about that cruise. It might be cool at night, (in Alaska) but it would be great for late afternoon movie under a blanket. It would be wonderful to sit an enjoy a movie before dinner after touring all day.

I can't think of anything more unappetizing than having to navigate the smoky casino on my way to or from dinner

Chris

You won't have to, just like you don't have to now. You'll just have to leave the theater at the bottom where currently you avoid the theater by going out the top of the theater. No biggie.

I agree.....Cold weather runs? MUTS? - UGH! Poor Star Princess!

More loud confusion/congestion at the Pool! Why don't they 'FIX the (1) AFT only way to the Amalfi Dining Room ? That would be a worhwhile fix!!

Guess the only 'quieter' Princess ships left to enjoy are the old 'Rens' - (They are so much more expensive!) SIGH!

Well I will let you know when we take her on October 11, after the drydocking. Will be at a disadvantage though having never been on a Grand Class before to really see the changes.

I, like SFParrtHd, will be on the Oct 11 sailing. Having been on The Grand Class (Golden) and The Caribbean/Gem Class (Crown) I am welcoming the changes. MUTS is great for passing some time, the International Cafe is great for a snack, and a casino on any deck is going to be fun. Just hope they get it all done in time.

Have you ever been to Alaska in June? You may get weather that allows you to get out on deck during the day, most likely you won't and you'll freeze out there at night in the cold...and wet. Having a big screen TV by the pool is one thing in the Caribbean, something totally different in Alaska. Best of luck.

I hope they at least turn the thing off while cruising the glaciers - I would hate to find the solitude and beauty of that time ruined by a NASCAR race on the TV.

I agree - the old "R" ships would be great for me - they are the right size for the type of cruising I like to do as well. But the per diem is higher and the ships aren't in reach for a good deal of time in the North American market. I understand the market Princess is trying to reach, but it seems like a stupid business decision to install this supposedly valuable equipment when it won't feasibly be used half the year.

I think the changes will be good to refresh Star Princess - MUTS - and to a certain extent Sanctuary - on a cold weather ship, however, makes no sense. It will be interesting to see how many actually go out and watch the thing while the ship is in Alaska.

Well, apparently it does make a difference - Princess states they are moving the casino to a place more centrally located.

Ok, so where are they going to put the jogging track?

With the Sanctuary taking over the court, is access limited to the swim against the current pool as well?

Or is it going to be a duplicate of the Crown/Emerald/Ruby/CB setup? (I'll get to see that in December.)

With the Crown Grill, Chef's Table and the UBD it looks like my on-board bill just went up a bit!

We will be on the Star to Mexico on October 21. The additional of MUTS is of no value to us, simply cheap entertainment. We enjoy going to the theatre, casino and a lounge for a drink and dancing. Sitting in lounge chairs used by folks at the pool with lotions and such simply does not appeal to us when we have dressed for dinner. Likewise, having a cocktail party around the pool is something we pass on for sure. Obviously, some folks really enjoy these venues, to each his own. :)
