Has anyone been denied admittance to the dinning room because of their attire?
If someone showed up at my house for a cocktail party dressed in jeans- you bet they wouldn't be coming in until they changed no matter who they were. :)
Are you serious? Wow. I'd just be happy to see my friends and to be able to spend time with them. I just can't even imagine telling one of my friends they weren't welcome in my home because of how they were dressed...party or not.
If you are concerned about formal wear perhaps you should try a different cruise lines. Many people pick CCL because it is relaxed and yes it is their vacation...... I am there to have fun not impress anyone or be impressed by someone else. I cant be that narrow minded..... As for the quote below ,at what fine dining restaurant have you seen the wait staff sing and dance on the tables? Do they sing Happy Birthday at fine dining restaurants? ....... The ambiance is Happy Birthday toshoes...... What is disrespectful is to not be open minded to other peoples opinion and choice.
Ya got my vote. Some people just don't get it and need to get a life. :D

If they were my friends, they would've dressed appropriately according to their invitation.... Respect for all guests and the host....

It depends on the situation and the generation. When my mom has friends over, it's dress-up time, and my mom cooks a fine dinner and brings out the nice china. (My mom is a top-notch cook.)

When I have friends over, it's T-shirts and jeans. But, it's bring-your-own-drinks, order some pizza, and lets watch some DVDs. We often use disposable plates or everyday dinnerware.

In both cases, good conversation is to be had. But, it's the context. When you have a fine dinner, it's often because it's a special occassion. Considering what I eat everyday, Red Lobster is considered a fine restaurant. :) On the Elation cruise, I was able to try out some dishes that I normally don't order at a restaurant because of the high price tag. Don't like it? Order something else. Love it? Let me have seconds.

If you want to enforce the dress code, so be it. I can see an exception because of sun poisoning. And, please, leave it extreme casual for the first night. Some people may not have gotten their luggage yet, and the first day is usually hectic because of embarkation and muster drill. But, only the first night.
We just got home from the Elation and learned some new lessons!
From now on, I will NOT tip the Maitre'd unless he does his job!!

We were a family of 4 and were placed at a very small private table right smack in the middle of 4 large round tables that sat 12 each. These particular 4 tables were a large group of gamblers - so were were told. Not only did most not even try to dress appropriately, they arrived to dinner totally and completely drunk every night! We endured this the whole cruise - it was terrible.

On the first formal night, one woman kept scooting her chair from table to table, ping/pong style all during the dinner. The final night, she leaned back in her chair and informed me there were many empty tables in the dinning room and we should move to one of them! When we got up to leave that night, all 4 tables actually SANG "Hit the road Jack, don't you come back no more!"

Carnival NEVER once said anything to this group. Each night the Maitre'ds assistant (I guess he, himself could be bothered with us - or maybe he was too embarrassed!) showed up at our table to apologize, she said they almost had to call security a couple of times.....but they never asked that they tone down their behavior or God forbid - leave????? I'm sure Carnival figured they were spending a ton of money in the Casino & on drinks and didn't dare want to offend them. Well....this was the latest dinner (8:30), during the same time that all the casino tournaments were going on - obviously they weren't participating!!! They WERE however, buying plenty of their drinks!!!!

Forget the jeans - I could have lived with that!
How about just appropriate behavior!!!!

How horrible. I'm sorry your family had to endure that! I'm sure your next cruise will be so much better, but that still doesn't erase this bad memory. Do write to Carnival. They need to compensate you in some way.

Two things.. just my opinions and bit of info.

1. I have only been on one carnival cruise, it was my first and only cruise so far. We didn't know much about cruising so when we got on the ship, my dad asked the mat'd what to wear on formal nights. He told my father to dress in a suite and my mom in a dress and that really people only usually dressed up the first night and the second formal night was usually less done up. He also said that jeans were just fine for the rest of the casual nights.

2. This hasn't been said it seems, but jeans CAN be nice. They are being made now to wear in dressy situations, not for formal night, but certainly for a casual dining night. I'm 22 yrs old and among my age group it is not only acceptable but expected that when going out all the gals wear nice jeans. They even make them now that are called "trouser jeans" They are usually a darker wash. Jeans don't have to be bad. This is not the 50's. I'm sure past generations would be appalled at what we call swimsuits too (remember they used to cover down to the knees on the ladies). Loosen up! Wear jeans! It's only denim :)

I don't think anyone is saying "jeans are bad", sure they are fine in certain situations... many don't feel that a formal dining room on the ship is one of those situations... bottom line, you can stitch on sequins, diamonds and gold... it's still denim :D Sure, I've seen nice jeans, I have a pair that cost me $150 (what WAS I thinking?)... would I wear them to the dining room? NO. No matter how I would dress them up, they would still be jeans... of course, that is just my opinion... I would not wear them to a nice restaurant at home either...

Yep it's only denim. The point is, denim, no matter the style, color or cost is still denim and not appropriate for the dining room. I can understand that there will be situations where this does not apply (lost luggage, sun poisoning), but otherwise it's not about the decade, it's about doing what's right and appropriate for the setting.

Note to self: Do NOT go shopping with GC for jeans!

LOL, I kicked myself 20 times after buying them! Have worn them ONCE! LOL! They were just one of those "OMG I have to have those" on a trip to NY once... did I mention it was a shopping trip that happened AFTER a margarita lunch? :D

LOL, A pair of $150 jeans later, I figured that out... oh, but you should see some of the other "winners" I picked up on that little shopping trip! LOL! I normally hate shopping, until Jose Cuervo decides to go with me

uhoh. I may be in trouble for formal night...

Since our cruise was on the winter, my girlfriend had bought a brand new outfit for the formal night. She didn't want to buy a formal dress (we're both in our mid 20's and we hardly ever do anything super formal), so she is wearing a very nice blouse with a knee length skirt and CFM boots.

Yes I know this isn't "formal" but it isn't "casual" IMHO.

Think we'll have any problems?

Edit: she'll also be wearing a broach and some other really nice jewelry in order to dress up her outfit somewhat.

For casual nights she is planning on wearing capri pants/khakis with a nice shirt or a sundress
The definition of slacks:

"trousers especially for casual wear"

Personally, I've never tried to confuse Denim Jeans with a trouser or slack. To me, there is a huge difference and I believe that Carnival knew that difference, but expected us to be smarter than maybe some are. I guess we should all start wearing pajama pants on Resort Casual nights since they aren't specifically listed as a "no no." Chaps are another hot item, and maybe just body paint to look like a pair of slacks. Had Carnival intended us to wear jeans, then they would have said jeans, not slacks.
Since you are getting into definitions...the definition of trousers: An outer garment for covering the body from the waist to the ankles, divided into sections to fit each leg separately. Often used in the plural.

So, slacks are casual garments covering the body from waist to the ankles, divided into sections to fit seach leg seperately.

Ergo...jeans are slacks.

Thanks Cali and Z'Loth - I have written Carnival, and cc'd Carnival Corporate too! If I hear back I'll post and let you know what they say. Notice I said IF...LOL

You know time does have a way of making things better. Since being back a couple of weeks now, the family is starting to speak of the cruise in better terms. It will forever be remembered for the dining room antics - but we did have a good time in the ports and the one thing that helped tremendously - we had a fabulous waiter at dinner (he was employee of the month)...another reason we decided they weren't going to run us off! You know, when your lucky enough to get one of those gems, it's hard to give it up!

Florentine and Vladimir were #1 - I just hope Carnival recognizes what they have and rewards them. I made sure to mention them in my letter too. You know...one of those here's where you did SOOOO good, and here is where you FLOPPED letters! ;-)
