Disney to base ship on the west coast

After the Port Canaveral confirmed that Disney is porting both ships there, I was convinced that one ship of the Disney Magic class would go to the West coast and the other would stay in Port Canaveral. Less likely would be to send both Panamax ships to the West Coast. I don't think that the demand is here.

Other than the new ships being tied to PC initially, there is the pesky problem of getting the new ships to the west coast. Kinda hard to get thru a lock that has not been built and is behind sched.

Assuming they could get the new ships there, I dont think Disney would have a problem with demand, as they can very easily tie them to a land sea vacation like they did with the Magic. True, with the economy the way it is, initally they might have an issue, but once things settle down, people will start booking again.

They don't have to go thru the canal....many ships don't.

I am just thrilled that they have permits in place to cruise/dock at ports in Alaska (excluding Glacier Bay)!! Being able to cruise Disney to Alaska will make me one happy camper!! Is it 2011 yet???

There's always the long way, around the Horn. A South American cruise would be awesome. It could be like Walt's post-strike "good will" trip that inspired the Enchanted Tiki Room, Jungle Cruise and Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros films.

A casino would be nice too.

I really hope they don't incorporate any more gambling and especially not a casino. It will bring down the entire feeling of the ship. One of the reasons we choose Disney is because of the family atmosphere; we would be very dissapointed to find a casino onboard.

wonder if it will be one of the new ones. I think it had been generally assumed that they would put one of the ships out here when the fleet eventually expanded. Look forward to news about this

Boh of the new ships will be sailing out of Port Canaveral. It's a part of a deal that DCL made with Port Canaveral in order to get them to expand the berthing to accomodate the much larger ships and expand the terminal and parking to serve many more passengers.

Disney announced a while ago gave up its app for the time being for Alaska. Theres no telling when they are going to go up there.

Could very well be.

From what I understand there is 5 ways to make it from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

1 The easiest assuming you fit is the Panama Canal.Until at least 2015 if the new locks open on the new time.

2. Around the horn of SA. From what I hear the military is not that happy with that route due to unpredicable weather, and when they do repo a ship, such as the USS Ronald Reagan, one of the newest carriers, they modified it.

3. The way the Reagan went. There is a cut thru, I forget where that actually is north of the Cape, that runs from the Atlantic to the Pacific, in fairly deep water, thru SA.

4. go west thru the med suez etc and come thru the long way.

5. Go around the horn of Africa.

The last 4 all of have their challenges ranging from weather, to pirates to length of time.

I think and this is me, that for the length of time, that it would take for the new ships to go around either horn, or the cut thru, that there would not be too many parent type families that would be willing to give up a month or so to do that.Plus the high price the trip would demand as the ship would not be making money for Disney for the length of the trip. Its a really long trip. And even then it would be after the new contract was up since they are both new ships are tied to PC for several years.

This is me thinking out loud, I can see Disney having both new ships at PC running 7 or more day trips thru the Carribean and possibly even to the Canal zone, while most likely the Magic does the west coast.

The remaining Magic class ship, could still do the 3/4/5 day itineraries until she would be needed on the west coast or somewhere else.

No, Disney decided only not to pursue Glacier Bay. There's a lot more to Alaska than that and many cruises to Alaska do not go to Glacier Bay.

I'd be very surprised if Disney doesn't send one ship to the west coast. My hope is that they will alternate itineraries including some to/from Hawaii (with pre or post cruise packages at Disney's Ko Olina...)

You are correct in that its the Galcier Bay app that was pulled. I took it as that is the only app they have out at the moment for Alaska.(Its the way the press release was worded.Have not heard or seen any other rumoured Disney/Alaska itineraries either) They may be looking at other places in Alaska, but I dont think well see them for at least 2 years or so.

That would be the Strait of Magellan. I can't imagine running a battle-group through there. It's as narrow as 2 miles and has a lot of weather problems especially fog. For a cruise ship it might be a better choice because it's a more comfortable ride and there's less ice.

I think that was it. There was a show on a while ago about the Reagan,( I am 99% sure it was her.) on the military channel I think. The show was based on when she had just been finished by Northrop Grumman,/Newport News or what ever its called this week, her sea trials and when she repoed from the Atlantic to the Pacific to her new home port. The Navy wasnt thrilled with sending the ship around the horn and the navigator came up with the idea of using the straight. They actually overnighted somewhere in the striaght waiting on the weather to clear since they were in between 2 fronts and both would bring 40 foot waves and gale force winds if they were caught in either of them.

Our family couldn't agree more, and it is also a big reason we chose Disney to cruise...
