Took a "trial" dose of dramamine before my cruise

Recommended Posts

We just got back from our very first cruise. I was really concerned about motion sickness and had all the stuff suggested on these boards with me - didn't have to use a one! I took the chance and was very glad I did, be sure you have a problem before taking the meds, just might be OK.

The problem with 'waiting to see if you have a problem' is that (for me anyway) once you start feeling sick you don't feel better until you are on LAND. I tried this before and kept bringing up everything I took . Trust me EVERYONE on the airplane knew who I was :o

Although this will be my first cruise; I wore the patch while in disney to go on a few rides - and it worked for me. The worst I got was a headache after spinning on the tea cups -- trust me that is a BIG deal for me only a headache and not tossing my cookies!! The only problem I had with the patch was my eyes had trouble focusing when I was trying to read the park map - but if I closed one eye (yeh like popeye) I was fine. I didn't feel dizzy; I just could focus my eyes to read the map; hopefully I can deal with it and will be able to read some on the ship.

Good luck and Dramamine does have a non drowsy formula.

Forgot to mention; I've tried ginger ale - didn't work by itself. If my stomach feels a little "funny" I will drink it and it does help. I've also had "REAL" ginger ale and it still didn't work. I wish I could just eat/drink ginger to make it go away. Unfortunately, I am getting worse and worse - I feel a little motion sickness when I go on the swingset in my yard - I know it sounds crazy but its true.:o

My 1st cruise is coming up, so this is not my story... but a bit scary. My mother in law has cruised many times. She gets a little sea sick & got some Dramamine from the doctor before she went on one of the cruises. She ended up blind for 3 days. A steward had to help walk her back from the casino to her room. It would really stink to go on a cruise & then become blind...

I have already purchased my big bottle of ginger pills, with no side effects, just in case!

*yawn* To see how it would effect me.

this stuff is knocking me out.

See you after my nap.

I will NOT be taking this on my cruise

(unless it's at night and I'm having difficulty sleeping) :p

g'nite!

ahhh...nap time Zzzzzzz

I get severe motion sickness. I get sick in the car, airplanes, amusement park rides, even fishing off our wharf makes me dizzy. Anyway I bought and took Bonine during our trip. It made me a bit sleepy; but I was able to stay awake (Dramimine knocks me out for hours) and I didn't get sick. I reccommend it 100%.

Why can't you eat ginger? Have you tried chrystallized ginger? It tastes good and it does help with sea sickness.

It says on the Bonine AND dramamine not to drink as well.

Well, I slept for 5 hours

I will stick with the Bonine, it didn't make me drowsy.

I just hope it helps with the "landsickness" when I get off the boat :D I don't normally get seasick ON the boats that I've been on, just the earth moving when I get off LOL

I totally agree with all the posters about Bonine. Regular Dramamine does some awful things to me, including drowsiness OR jumpiness, sleepiness OR sleepnessness, unusual dreams, and changes in my heart rate that are quite noticeable. Have never felt a thing when I have taken Bonine, and although I admit I only take it rarely - when I do I take 2 pills instead of 1.

As far as waiting to see, I did have the motion sickness bands with me, which, they say, start to work right away. I didn't need to find out. AND I always take something for a flight, always, I've flown enough to know that I get deathly sick on the plane (which is why I thought I'd get sick on the boat). Funny, I felt fine on the boat.

Try reducing the dose and/or taking non-drowsy Dramamine.

I get very bad air sickness so I always take dramamine when I fly. I find I only need 1/2 of one tablet (they're very small, but they're scored so you can cut or bite them in half). That takes care of the air sickness, and makes me much less drowsy. If you take two pills or even one whole one, you are going to feel very sleepy and cranky!

Well I tried the ginger ale when I had really really bad morning sickness (for about 5 months) and nothing seemed to work; I didn't come right out and eat ginger but I did try quite a few things that had high amounts from a "health food store" nothing helped then. May I'll try it when I get on the swings with my kids but would never want to risk trying something new on an airplane or boat - BTDT and it was NOT PRETTY let me tell you. :o

You could do like the "complainer" on the other thread and ask the captain to slow the ship down.

If y'all havent read the thread about the best/worst complaints go right over there. It is hilarious.

LOVED THAT THREAD, MADE MY DAY.:o
