Did you think the sea was rough on the Pacific? Some people have told me they thought it was?
Depends on the time of the year and storms of course, but generally going South no (the ship is actually "surfing" down the front of the swells usually). . . but sometimes returning North . . . yes, a little. The Pacific current along the California and Mexico coast comes down from Alaska, this current added to any winter storms which also come down the coast from Alaska can make the return to LA a little bumpy. The larger ships today make this less noticeable, but to the very sensitive it can be noticed.

When its most noticeable, if at all, is at night cruising from Mazatlan to Los Cabos, where the ship has to cross the mouth of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California). Here the water sometimes can't make up its mind whether it wants to be the Sea of Cortez or the Pacific Ocean . . . can be very rough if there's wind involved. One of the roughest times I've "enjoyed" on a cruise ship has been on the ELATION making this run at top speed with a sick passenger in a hurry to deliver him/her to Los Cabos. All the doors on the 3rd deck (atrium deck) were locked to prevent paxs from going out on deck to experience the large swells (15-20') and ungodly wind. Exhilirating to me. :)

I've got admit that I've never quite gotten the whole In N Out thing. It's alright. My wife says their shakes are great.

If I do go, though, I get the double-double animal style.

I was on the 4/5 sailing too and the only day I felt any kind of rough seas was the day at sea when we were heading from Cabo back to LA. My wife got a little sick in the morning and then she was fine. My brother's wife get motion sickness easily and I don't think I saw her for much of the day. We were sitting in the Thalasso pool in the Spa right in the front of the ship and I think that made her sick.

We couldn't really make use of the balcony that day either. It was so cold and windy that I sat out there for about 20 minutes with my son and it got so cold we had to go in.

Other than that one day the seas were perfect.

Ginger tablets are the way to go. They are a natural way to help with motion sickness. I start taking them a few days before we sail (one in the morning and one a night) and I haven't had a problem with the motion sickness in a long time. The ride back from Cabo to Long Beach, like the other posters had said, is where you would probably feel it the most movement if you are sensitive to the motion.

Yes, there was a lot of rocking on that day. I actually did feel a tad queasy at one point in the afternoon on Saturday, but I never get seasick (except for the big boat to catalina...erg!)

WARNING: OT

The thing with In N Out is the freshness of their ingredients. Even the fries are made on the spot. I really love the shakes since they use real ice cream :p We are "supposed" to be getting one here in N. Utah so I am totally looking forward to it!!

Now back to our regular discussion...:D

Winterstale - my boyfriend and I are around the same ages as you and we both have grown kids of our own so we know as parents you have to give them some freedom in order for them to learn to be adults. But, I have a feeling that some of the kids that acted out of control do so at home too! The ship does have an area to sit out and relax called the 'serenity area' for adults which does stay as an adult area. The rear pool & whirlpools are designated as adults only. On some days you will see security there to keep the kids out but on one day there were 3 families together - all with children under the age of approx. 9. The kids were using both the pool & spas so I said something to a bartender who called for security. The bartender told me that the families were there all week and were told plenty of times to leave. Security came, asked them to leave but didn't stay around to see if they did leave - which they didn't. So I finally said something to them. Also the ship has a video arcade room which has kids hanging outside which you sometimes have to weave your way through the kids to go to areas past it. With all that being said - we still had a great time and look forward to our next cruise.

Thank you for the reviews!!! This will only be my second cruise and 4th for my husband. Been a long time since we have had a real vacation.

I was on the Valor in the summer of 2006 with Ron Pass and I am glad to hear that he is still putting just as much into his "shows". He made the cruise worth every penny!

Misty, thanks for the great review, pictures, and the capers. I know they must have been a lot of work to post for us!

We are thinking about taking this cruise in October for our honeymoon. Hopefully it will be more party/less kids since school will be in session!

Thanks again!

I finally got a chance to check into this roll call as the hours to cruisin' get short. My wife and I hail from South Florida, so we're used to last-minute packing and just getting dropped off at the port. To all of those that regularly have to pack for airline travel, deal with hotels and rental cars, etc., I now respect all of the efforts you put into a cruise. This is the first time my wife has packed for a cruise since 9/11 and she's trying to figure out how dozens of cosmetic items and perfumes can fit into that tiny ziplock bag!

I've cruised with Ron Pass many times before, the last time was on the Splendor last September out of Rome, Italy (my DW didn't go that time). You are in for a treat! Ron, based on the review earlier in the thread, Sharon's really looking forward to meeting you now!!!! She already knew you are fun and talented, but she'll have to judge the rest for herself:

Ron is fun and talented (and he's nice to look at too, ladies)

Anyway, joining us will be friends that have sailed with me on prior Ron Pass cruises: Steve is joining us, also from South Florida, and another multiple-cruise friend Jayne is meeting us in Long Beach after traveling from Kentucky.

So until the meet-and-greet, I wish you safe journeys and great times ahead.

Misty -

I read a few other places that the lines were overly-long for the buffets and that the ship seemed overly-crowded. What was your experience? I'm just trying to figure out if this reviewer had unrealistic expectations going in, or if it really is that crowded, regardless of how big the ship is.

Thanks.

I realized that my reply was posted to the wrong thread - it was meant for the 4/19/2009 Splendor roll call.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the cruise and we're looking forward to ours in three days. Good review, by the way.

The lines for the buffet were a b it long, but I believe they moved quickly. We only went to the buffet for lunch (when we weren't on excursions and one breskfast) mostly because no matter how long or short the line is, it is more difficult to get your food, drinks--especially if you want something from more than one line.

Hey Jeff, please take care of the Splendor for us, will you? We'll be boarding as you're leaving on 4/26! Enjoy your cruise!

Hi Misty,

First I want to say thanks for the great review of the Splendor. We are soooooo looking foward to this cruise, mainly because it is out of LA, we usually stick to cruises this side of the country, so this will be a great cruise for us. The pictures were wonderful, it looked liked you and your family had a great time.

A couple questions, who was the Cruise Director? and was he or she good?

Our stateroom will be just down the hall from where yours was, before we book a room we do our homework and find the room that has the least noise from bars, casino, ect.

Chris

The Cruise Director was Goose (Gustav). I have to admit that I did not care for him. He's not bad, he just wasn't very lively.

According to the list posted on John Heald's blog, this is Goose's last week on the Splendor. I think the new name is Karl Bird (really small and hard to read!).
