Veendam vs. Statendam

The Veendam is presently in dry dock getting quite a few new enhancemnets.

Cabins are being added, the aft pool is being moved up a deck and being turned into a resort like area, the piano bar and casino bar are being torn out and replaced with a Martini Bar and on the Promenade Deck, quite a few cabins will become lanai cabins with doors opening out onto the deck.

That's just some of the things that I can think of.

I was on the Veendam last summer and then the Statendam 6 months later. The ships are pretty much the same. If I had to choose I would choose the Statendam, however the Veendam will be getting out of drydock so she'll be all spiffed up.

To be quiet honest I would take the Ryndam simply so you can see Sitka.

You can't go wrong with any "Dam" ship

Have Fun

I agree. HAL will not be doing the Ryndam's one-way itinerary (Ketchikan, Haines/Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, Hubbard Glacier) in 2010 - so do it while you can in 2009.

We have not been on the Statendam but really do like the Veendam and it should be in first rate condition just out of a month long dry dock. Sitka is a wonderful port and we always enjoy going there!! The Russian influence is very interesting!

Sitka is great, but neither ship being considered goes there.

Oh, that is so sad. Do you think HAL would have a different ship do that itinerary, or are they dropping that itinerary completely? That is the itinerary I would like to take if I ever get back to Alaska. Was hoping to convince DH to go this year with the great price drops, but so far, no luck. :(

This year is your only chance to do that itinerary with HAL. HAL has had 3 ships do one-ways - with two (Statendam/Veendam) going to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway/Haines, Glacier Bay, College Fjord. The Ryndam goes to 4 ports and Hubbard Glacier. In 2010, HAL will have only two ships doing one-ways, and both will go to the same 3 ports + 2 glaciers. Instead of a 3rd ship doing the other one-way itinerary, HAL will have a 4th ship sail from Seattle on 14-night cruises.

**HAL's 2010 Alaska itineraries are on their web site.

P.S. Go without your husband!

Thanks for all of the info!

Unfortunately, we are waiting to do our next trip until 2010, which is causing a lot of itinerary problems!! We originally wanted to go with Carnival, but they dropped the northbound/southbound trips for 2010.

For our second choice, we are leaning towards Princess, but they have yet to come out with their 2010 itineraries and prices.

We started looking into HAL since we are interested in trying them...so any information is appreciated about the cruise line.

I was in Sitka about 10 years ago...and remember loving the other ports a lot more. I guess that if I had to pick one to leave off of an itinerary...that would be the one.

I don't like the itineraries for RCL or Celebrity...and I will probably never sail with NCL again.

How do Princess and HAL compare? Any thoughts?

Since this is for 2010, be aware that you'll be choosing between the Statendam and the Ryndam - not the Veendam. The Veendam will be in Bermuda in 2010.

Princess's one-ways will probably have the same itinerary as HAL's in 2010 - except the cruise will begin or end in Whittier instead of Seward. HAL goes to Skagway on the northbound cruises and to Haines on the southbound cruises - whereas Princess goes to Skagway both directions. Since you don't like RCI's or Celebrity's itineraries, it is a moot point that HAL won't have a 3rd ship doing one-ways with a similar itinerary.

Princess's ships are considerably larger than HAL's, and I think Princess's ships are prettier. The food is comparable. I think HAL's ships have better outside viewing areas, and their inside and oceanview cabins are larger than those on Princess.

The ships are identical. The Statendam is the oldest of the "S" Class ships and the Veendam is the newest. I have a slight preference for the Statendam but both are nice ships. The Veendam will have more abiances after it gets out of drydock and perhaps that explains the price difference. I prefer the Atrium of the Statendam as well as the big show lounge. I think the Statedam is a little more luxurious but both ships are nice ships
