Well, we had a wonderful time on our Star cruise to Alaska. Thanks to all the great tips from CC that made it even more special.

We were upgraded to a mini suite, 11032. This mini was in between 2 owners suites and our neighbors on both sides were wonderful. Mike and Barbara on the left side shared their afternoon goodies with us as we sat and visited on the balcony. Wow!! Chocolate covered strawberries, ummmm...

We had great weather throughout the cruise all week, sunshine and warm weather in Alaska, who would of thought?? We did hit some snow on our excursion out of Skagway as we took Dyea Dave's tour to Emerald Lake, BC. Sunshine and snow all in the same day!! I would highly recommend DAVE and his tours.. Another WOW!!!

One highlight was visiting the Governor's House in Juneau!! If you visit, ring the doorbell and ask for a tour or purchase a Christmas Ornament. We did not know to do this but our rental car agent, Rent a Wreck, told us about it on our return to the ship. I asked if she would swing by there and she did. You would be amazed that the Governor's house is in a nice little neighborhood next to other homes with a trampoline in the yard for the kids.

We saw all kinds of wildlife from the ship and in port from Whales (too many to count), bears outside Skagway and in Frasier, seals in PR, a shark in PR, dear in Juneau, goats at Mendenhall Glacier, Dall Sheep and a porcupine on our way to Emerald Lake, BC, and Eagles (all ports)..

Ship was clean. Our cabin smelled of cigarette smoke really bad upon arrival, but a quick call to housekeeping and Michelle came and washed down all the walls, furniture, carpets, changed the bedding, pillows, and everything else with some kind of cleaner that took the smell right out without fumigating the room with a scent or odor.. We gave her a nice tip for what she did... we recieved a follow up call to make sure it was taken care of within an hour, NICE!!

Shows were good, food was good, buffet was limited but I really liked the Pizza and REAL shrimp cocktails from the ceasar salad station. Blue Lagoon was great for that late night snack and YES, they will cover it and place it on a tray for you to take back to your room.

Most of the Cruise Staff was delighful. The CD was new to the ship so most of the activities were hosted by Gary, the asst. Maria and Aaron were great and the one little guy, can't remember his name, was hysterical. I laughed every time I saw him, he was so cute and he grinned at everything!!!

Embarkation went smoothly, we were on the ship within 30 minutes from baggage drop to sipping champagne. Disembarkation was a little slower as the crew check went on but we were off the ship by 9am and at the airport by 9:40 which we had to wait 3 hours for our flight. I wanted to be sure we got there in time, but we could have stayed on the ship a little longer...

Overall -- FANTASTIC Trip and can't wait for the next one!!

Thanks for this great review, dasey! So glad to hear that you had a good time. It sounds like it was just a terrific cruise!

Was this a RT Seattle or did you leave from Vancouver?

Roundtrip from Seattle. We did leave a few hours late because they were behind in loading the supplies but we hd plenty of things to keep us busy. Seattle was having their Maritime Festival on the docks and we watched the annual homemade boat races. It looked like high school students participating and some of them had some pretty neat looking boats!! We all cheered from the decks and balconies... We did have a little excitement at the baggage drop. We were lined up in two lines to drop our bags at the scanner and the NCL reps lining us up started telling people to just move forward and forget about the lines. Well that did not set too well with the baggage handlers and screeners as they work for the Port Authority. The baggage handlers/screeners started yelling at the NCL reps that we needed to be in two lines to keep everything on pace. Well, we were like the fourth in line one and they walked off the job, so we had to wait a few minutes until the port supervisor came and he told the NCL people to keep us in two lines or they would not continue. Actually, the port people were right, we had been in a line and all these others people flooded the front and just dropped bags and walked off. So they didn't know whose bag was who's. Anywho, it was free entertainment and we all clapped and cheered for the baggage handlers!!

I'm so glad to see your review. I'm taking my 1st NCL cruise on the Star in June. I usually sail on Celebrity & have no idea what to expect. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd love to hear more about the food. I'm travelling with my sisters & I know they won't want to pay extra for the specialty restaurants. Although, I am going to try to talk them into one night, just to humor me. ;) More details on the included food would be great.

Also, would you mind sharing more info on the entertainment. I have one sister who's never cruised. She's very hyper. I'm afraid she'll go stir crazy. Is there enough to do to keep her busy. We're hoping she'll survive sea days w/o jumping overboard. :p

PS: My sisters don't drink alcohol or gamble, so anything including either of those is out.

I have been on the Star twice and frankly your sister will be bored during the day. Most of their activities are centered around drinking. They do have daily trivia but that is about it.

Thanks, Dasey for taking the time to share your cruise with us. I'm glad to hear you had a great time. I see that you got a special treat by cruising up the east side of Vancouver Island. Was there any indication as to why they changed the route?

You didn't mention Tracy Arm Fjord/Sawyer Glaciers. How was that? How close did you get to the Sawyer Glaciers?

I'm glad to hear you had a good time with Dyea Dave. We enjoyed our excursion with him last year. He's quite the character and aims to please his customers!

Welcome back! Any chance you'll be posting some pictures to share with us? Thanks!

Maybe she can get a spa pass for the week...then on sea days she can hang out there...or visit the library.

Your trip sounds great. Thanks for the review. We leave on 6/6. Do you happen to have the dailies or menus?

Thanks.

Hey Starla...haven't seen you for awhile....we're finally closing in on it!!

Have you checked the roll call lately....well it's not exactly on fire, but we probably have about 14 adults and 5 teens. :)

Are you packing yet?

Julie was the voice that we heard most often on the STAR Alaska cruise, pitching & reminding all about the upcoming Bingo sessions in the lounge. That "little guy" was he Asian (Philipino) & always there helping to run the bingo & instant wins in the lounge and down in the showroom. Reading the review & comments help bring back memories of our recent trip on her.

The little guy was also at "Fountains" and he sang really good at the crew's talent show and on stage during the Farewell's "We Are The World"

Beers in the bucket also seemed to sell really well on the STAR compared to other NCL ships.

Hope this helps in answering a few of those questions:

Food: Anything that I don't have to cook or clean up is great with me so I'm probably not the best on reviewing this subject, but I'll try.

We did eat in the Versailles and Aqua and the food was very good. DH thought the portions were small on some plates but when I told him to order another, he was happy. The steaks were always great, imo. I even tried escargot for the first time, not bad..

We had breakfast in Aqua (private for balcony and above cabins only) and that was enjoyable. DH tried eggs benedict, was not impressed but he has never had them before.

Market Buffet was standard buffet food but not as much variety as one would think, seemed like the same menu every day. Pizza was great!

The outdoor grill was great with hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, fries, salads, etc..

Blue Lagoon had great wings and fish and chips. Was very quick as well.

We did do the Teppanyaki, which imo was outstanding and worth the additional $25.

We also ate in Le Bistro (anniversary pkg) and it was good. Not our cup of tea but it was a great steak.

Entertainment: The Jean Ryan Co. did a tribute to Andrew Lloyd Weber, which was okay. Their second show was 70's mix, which was excellent and I did not catch the last show, to much going on elsewhere.

Matilda the Jamaican Diva was hilarious, you must see her. It is a ventriliquist act and we laughed so much - 2 shows.

Murray the magician was also excellent.

They had the Cirque show but I did not see any of it but heard it was good.

Also, the crew put on the crew show which was good but too short. Opening act is a must see, Romeo as Michael Jackson and the last act, crew staff performing "Fountains", hilarious!!

Activities: I also am not a drinker but found plenty of things to do, I do have the dailies but am not sure how to post them but I can scan and email them to anyone who would like them, just let me know where to send. The scenery and wildlife spotting is great and we spent a good two afternoons on the balcony watching and visiting with our neighbors that we met. There is a cinema with up to date movies, not new releases but good selection. The card room and library were always full. Seminars throughout the cruise on Alaska, were great. The lecturer, Dr Don, made his 100th cruise and is really interesting to listen to .. The activities were catered to an older crowd and there were some wine tasting, martini clinics but not too much alcohol driven activities. We enjoyed the Karaoke nights and Karaoke IDOL is funny, don't miss it..

Sawyer Glacier and Tracy Arm Fjord: WOW!!! We were able to get right up to the glacier. There was quite a bit of ice floating but the ship was able to make it all the way from what I could tell. The weather was beautiful, sun was shining, so standing on deck was not too cold. We saw seals and eagles as well. The captain turned the boat completely around so everyone had the opportunity to see the glacier close up.. The waterfalls running down the fjords were outstanding to see and hear!! Take your binoculars..

I was not aware we went a different way leaving Seattle so I am not sure. Noone said anything, so off we were. It was beautiful scenery everywhere.

The little guy: He was helping in all the activities, never really ran anything but was a helper and I laugh everytime I think of him. We was in the Fountains show (crew show) but did not sing, he kept laughing and spitting out his water too early. Also, plan to see him line dancing at the Hootenananny. LOL!!

Romeo and Jennifer: are your cruise consultants and you will hear them most of the time selling NCL cruise rewards, alot of people were buying them (put 250 down on a future cruise and you get instant 100 OBC for current cruise). He is funny as well.

Casino: We actually won money and the best dealer is Adrian from the Phillipines. He will teach you, coach you and help you. Look for him as they travel around the casino. Stay away from the expensive BINGO, we did not play but we watched a few games and they had up to 18 people win on one game. $12 payout. Save your money for the good stuff!

Don't know if I can figure out how to post pictures, but I will try.

And nope, did not see Putin rearing anything up anywhere, although it was a bright sunny day!!!

Happy Sailing to YOU!!!

We did eat in the Versailles and Aqua and the food was very good. DH thought the portions were small on some plates but when I told him to order another, he was happy.

I fear my DH will have the same problem so thanks for the heads up. Was there a terrible wait when ordering seconds or did you do it all at once?

We had breakfast in Aqua (private for balcony and above cabins only) and that was enjoyable. DH tried eggs benedict, was not impressed but he has never had them before.

As far as you could tell, was there TRULY a significant difference in having bkfast in Aqua as opposed to any other place? Just wondering. Bkfast is very important to me and I'm looking forward to a nice, quiet experience. No hustle, bustle, or overcrowding

The outdoor grill was great with hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, fries, salads, etc..

I understand that the outdoor grill does bkfast as well. Is this true? Did you get to survey the crowd?

We did do the Teppanyaki, which imo was outstanding and worth the additional $25.

I keep hearing how hard it is to get a reservation here. What was your experience? If you don't mind me asking, what did you have here?

We also ate in Le Bistro (anniversary pkg) and it was good. Not our cup of tea but it was a great steak.

I have also ordered this package. You mentioned you don't drink. What non-alcholic substitutions were available in this package?

Thanks for such a great review and the info regarding the entertainment. I've made notes of all!

Dasey,

Thanks for the great review and answering questions. We are getting on the Star on the 4th of July. This is our first cruise to Alaska for 6 out of 7 of us.

We would absolutely love to see the dailies ahead of time. My email is:

mikechellschneider@yahoo.com

Thank you so much for offering to send them! :):):)

DH ordered seconds when he saw he needed to and it did not take any time before the food arrived. We did order two appetizers at a time to prevent the server from running back a second time.

We ate breakfast in both main DR and once in the buffet, the DR's were not crowded and it was pleasant dining at our leisure. No rush, no fuss...

The outdoor grill did not do breakfast on our trip, but you could get omelets made to order at the buffet.

We made our Teppanyaki reservation after we arrived on the ship, after our leisurely lunch in the Versailles. They were talking reservations all week and none of the speciality restaurants were full. You could walk up without reservations and get seated from what I saw. We changed our Le Bistro twice because of other activities gettting in the way. I had the steak and shrimp, ummmm. Best meal of the trip for me.. and I asked for tea, thinking it was iced tea (Texas thing) but I got HOT green tea but it was very good after it cooled down a bit.. try it if you can,,

Anniversary package: I did sip on the champange the whole week but you can substitute both bottles for a non alcoholic wine, I am not sure what exaclty we got at dinner but it was good, maybe apple something. Just let them know you want non alcoholic and they will give you options.

Yep, we were in the Tracy Arm and went all the way in. The week prior was not so lucky but the ice must have broke free because we had a great trip in to see Sawyer Glacier. I will try to figure out how to download the pictures.

I'll scan those dailies and get them to you!!

One other thing, Don't be shy and ask questions to the staff, we found them all to be very helpful and accommodating.

Also, in the Spinnaker Lounge, directly behind the stage curtain, is a counter with little square brass looking screens. You can look in these and see the bridge down below. It also tells you what instrument you are looking at and what it is used for. At first, from the distance,it looks like a picture but you have to get right up to it and look down and to see it.

Thanks for the info. My sister loves Jeopardy, so she'll probably like the daily trivia contest. Hopefully, I can get out of it. :p

Maybe she can get a spa pass for the week...then on sea days she can hang out there...or visit the library.

Thanks for the suggestions. 2 of my sisters love to read. The hyper sister also likes it, but she'd rather socialize when she's with people. I'm sure they'll all pay more than 1 visit to the library. I'm perfectly happy sitting on deck viewing the scenery.

Hope this helps in answering a few of those questions:

Food: Anything that I don't have to cook or clean up is great with me so I'm probably not the best on reviewing this subject, but I'll try.

lol... You sound like my sisters.

I forgot about the lecturers. On my other cruise to Alaska, I didn't go to any lectures. I really want to see some this time.

I'd love to have a copy of the dailies. Would you mind PMing me to get my email address? I tried to send you a PM, but you apparently don't have that option available. Thanks

Thanks for the binoculars tip. We had them in our cabin, when my DH, DS, & I went. I'll make sure to bring some. It sounds beautiful! We saw Hubbard Glacier before.

You were actually next to a Penthouse suite and NOT an owners suite. My parents had your exact same room on the cruise right before yours. We had the connecting Penthouse "the Opal Suite" on the sailing May 2-9

I think that you guys got just as far as we did the week earlier. The ice was broken free as we broke through it on the week earlier. The passage was completly blocked with ice until we sailed through it.

Dasey, you've done a wonderful job of reviewing your cruise for all of us anticipating our cruises on the Star to Alaska. Thank you for taking the time! So many return from their cruises, then forget all about Cruise Critic, and how eager everyone is to hear about your cruise.

I'm so happy you had a wonderful time and I can't wait for our cruise on the Star in just 11 days!

You were very fortunate to have cruised up the east side of Vancouver Island with the fantastic scenery. If you would have cruised on the west side (according to the itinerary), you would have seen open seas and no land for the majority of the first sea day after leaving Seattle.

Thanks again, Dasey!:)

We did not see any calving at the glacier but we did see some beautiful blue icebergs on our way in. The color is unbelievable. You must take binoculars, don't forget them.. We also saw many seals in this area laying on the ice soaking up the sun....
