CordovaMom Posted September 13, 2005 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2005 Not an expert but hurrican season in the caribbean runs through the end of November, that said, there have only been 6 named hurricanes that have hit the US in November since storms started being named. The Western Caribbean is another problem, probably the most powerful hurricane to ever hit, was Mitch in early November 1998. It was a cat 5 that caused catastrophic damage and deaths.Honduras: 5,657 persons were killed, 8,052 are missing, 11,762 were injured while approximately 1.9 million are affected. Nicaragua: 2,863 people had died, 884 are missing, and 867,752 are affected Guatemala: 258 deaths and 120 people missing. El Salvador: 239 deaths and 135 people missing. Costa Rica: 4 deaths; 4 people missing. We're also taking our chance by sailing November 6th in the Western Caribbean, anyone that sails in hurricane season has to prepare for the possibility of a hurricane, but we pray for great sailing weather. texas greeneyes Posted September 13, 2005 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2005 Technically, the hurricane season runs from the beginning of June through the end of November, so there is a possibilty of a major storm affecting your cruise. That being said, I consulted the National Hurricane Center and came up with some reassuring statistics for you regarding a November western Caribbean cruise. Their list of major storms dates back to 1900 and contains 31 hurricanes and tropical storms. Broken down by the month they made landfall, it shows 4 storms in June, 1 in July, 7 in August, 14 in September, 4 in October, and only 1 in November. I'd say chances are pretty slim that your cruise will be negatively impacted. Go for it! By the way, I am leaving November 20 for a seven day western Caribbean cruise myself! :D
derf5585 Posted September 13, 2005 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2005 Am in need of worrying for a W. Carribean cruise that is to sail on the 13th. of Nov.??? On the 1st of November a butterflys wing will flap in Africa causing a ridge of low pressure to form a ridge 2nd of November. As it starts to race across the Atlantic picking up speed and intensity 4th November. It is now a tropical inflation 5th November. It is now the 27th named storm (aadvark) changing from a inflation to a depression. 7th November. Enters Eastern Caribean and stall for a couple of days 9th November. Becomes a hurrican. 12th November. Your ship departs trying to outrun the hurricane. Which it does after the ship speeds up and changes course. MERVYN BREMMER Posted September 13, 2005 #7 Share Posted September 13, 2005 This year has been a bit abnormal as far as storms are concerned. We prefer to cruise from mid Oct on because there is less of a chance to encounter storms. Be concerned if you must but don't fret over it. Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted September 14, 2005 #8 Share Posted September 14, 2005 This year has been a bit abnormal as far as storms are concerned. You have that right... July is typically a SLOW hurricane month - yet when we sailed on the Miracle July 3rd we had a near miss with Cindy on the way down, and followed Dennis back :( ... GEESH!!! nybumpkin Posted September 14, 2005 #9 Share Posted September 14, 2005 You have that right... July is typically a SLOW hurricane month - yet when we sailed on the Miracle July 3rd we had a near miss with Cindy on the way down, and followed Dennis back :( ... GEESH!!! Tom Agreed, Tom! We took a chance on Conquest sailing 7/3 - not supposed to be a stormy month. (My dad grew up at the Jersey Shore - he always had a good sense of the weather. Never swim before July 4, but you can easily swim into September if you watch out for the storms and riptides.) Thanks to Hurricane Dennis, we ended up with a missed port and extra time in Cozumel (met up with your sailing there - heard you had a rough sailing back to Tampa) and a delayed return. However, we can't sail other times of the year. Having said that, I'm very thankful we didn't run into Katrina. She made Dennis look like a minor event, despite the damage Dennis caused. zydecocruiser Posted September 14, 2005 #11 Share Posted September 14, 2005 Hurricanes can really occur anytime - not like they have to have a license to drive. Late season hurricanes tend to go the wrong way, so Western Caribbean should be a safe bet.

Well.. they may not put you in harms way... but they MAY get close enough to the storm (in an effort to stay as close to schedule as possible --- read $$$) that many people will have problems with the high seas.... we had gusts up to 60 something knots, with steady wind of 30-40 for hours on end... WHEW  Tom
