I've reserved the Marina Bay Sands hotel for our first visit to Singapore, were staying 3 nights pre cruise (Mariner of the Seas 6th Feb).........would appreciate advice on whether the hotel is in a good location for visiting china town, Orchard Road etc.......hoping it has good transport links and I want a nice area to stroll in the evening. Would welcome any other hotel recommendations.

Can't answer you're questions, but just wanted to say we're staying at the Marina Bay Sands for 3 nights before our March 7th Mariner cruise too! I'm so excited.

It's a bit of a walk anywhere from from there. The Hop on Hop off bus has a stop right outside the hotel...so with a 2 day pass you can hit all your favorite places easily. The casino is across the street, but if you don't have your passport with you they won't let you in.

Its pretty easy to get from Marina Bay Sands to any of the location that you mentioned via the MRT (train), it just at the Basement next to the Casino. If you want to save time, take a taxi (if you have 3 or 4 people) to Chinatown or Orchard road. If by yourself, train or the Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) bus will be cheaper. You can ask any Singaporean there to show you how to buy the train ticket on the ticketing machine.

You can even walk to Garden by the Bay or the Singapore Flyer from the Marina Bay Sand Hotel. Ask from the Hotel desk where the HOHO ticket counter is located if you want to try it.

We stayed one night at MBS (just for the experience) and three at the Conrad last year.

Make sure you don't book the cheapest room as you will get a low floor. After lots of research I am glad I booked a club room - high floor and we were upgraded to a humungous suite with views over the city from the lounge and bedroom and from the bathroom we looked over the Gardens by the Bay. Club access included breakfast, all day refreshments, afternoon tea and evening drinks and canapes :).

Time your visits to the pool for during the day when most people are out sightseeing and at conferences. It gets ridiculously crowded after about 3pm and into the evening.

There is a train station right underneath the hotel which is convenient for access to lots of areas around Singapore including the airport.

Oh, and don't miss Gardens by the Bay just behind the hotel.

  • 4 weeks later...

Had a week in Singapore staying at the Oriental Mandarin & travelled in taxis daily - they are really cheap (in comparison to Australia that is) - always plenty available & drivers pleasant. I agree, Gardens by the Sea is a great destination (advise to go late in the afternoon - cooler), the Domes are magnificent (fee) if you are a gardener. The Zoo is another great site - I was originally concerned about the heat as we are elderly, but on arrival, found that the paths where mostly shaded by trees, with plenty of seats to "rest on". Singapore is a beautiful city, expensive though. We were first there 24 years ago, loved it then & again in 2013.

No doubt MBS (Marina Bay Sands) is now an icon (you can't beat that Infinity Pool!) and the transport links are decent. However, I do find it a bit out of the way.

Watch this video - from 1:45 onwards, I drive towards the MBS area, from the older Marina area.
