What to do in Le Havre??

You raise very good points. We do really enjoy visiting Giverny (but we are huge Monet and Impressionist fans) but Monet's home is generally very crowded during the high season (including June). But as long as you are not planning to go back to the ship for an early dinner (we would probably buy ourselves dinner in Honfleur) you can certainly get it done in a day. Etretat (and nearby Fecamp) are places we put low on our list...and mention them for those that have essentially done it all in the region. By the way, there is small village called Beuvron en Auge.....which can be combined with a visit to Honfleur. Beuvron is not often visited on tours...but is really a very cute village worth an hour. A very attractive and strange place for this part of France. Here is a link that gives you an idea why:

So now, we have probably complicated your plans :)

Thanks Hank! Will put it to the others but I'm guessing they'll vote for Giverny as we're also huge Monet fans. We won't be staying too long in Rouen, just see the cathedral, then head out to Honfleur for dinner. Not too late though, as we have an 8am departure the next morning:D

Perhaps you are not aware that it is about a 2 1/2 hour drive (each way) from Le Havre to Mont Saint-Michel. Since you do not want a long ride this is not a good option. As to Giverny, it is about 1:40 (and it could take somewhat longer depending on the traffic near Giverny which is a reasonable day trip...but still involves a lot of transport time. Since you are on Viking, your cruise does include some excursions so you might want to look at their options.

thanks, Hank...just the information that I was hoping to get. Yes, Viking has an excursion to Giverny that also will include Roen so that is probably what we will do unless we can find an private tour that will be reasonably priced.

A 1 3/4 hour bus ride is doable...over 2 not so much

We were in Le Havre this May on the Navigator of the Seas transatlantic.

In the am we took the ship's tour "Extended half-day to Honfleur", returning after 1.00. We had lunch and a rest on the ship and later went to Le Havre's Malraux museum. It was walkable but there was a shuttle for 4 euros to the main square which was well worth it. The Malraux has a wonderful collection of Renoirs.

Will dock in LeHarve in April on our Caribbean Princess TA and have decided to use our last cruise day by staying close to the ship. Interested in your reference to Malraux Museum and even more would like info about the main square. Is it safe to stroll and interesting shops, etc.? Thanks!

We did a wonderful tour to Normandy that included the Normandy Beaches, WWII sites, American Cemetery and Bayeux. The highlight was seeing the Bayeux Tapestry, a 900 year old story of the Norman conquest of England. Don't miss it.

yes safe to stroll and there are pedestrian streets, with shops of all kinds. We walked to the museum following the marina road which was very scenic. There is also a very nice cafe in the museum.

Thanks so much for your response. Sounds like a great way to spend our last day before flying home. Enjoy your travels!

We enjoyed taking the "Paris own your excursion" offered by the ship.

Worked by us because we were able to do the exact things we wanted to do and had not done on previous visits there. :)

Hi, Did you happen to take the Paris on your own excursion on a Viking Cruise? Were you able to see the Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triomphe , Champs Elysees, Notre Dame, etc. Just wondering how close these buildings are to each other. Thank you for any help you can supply.

We did a ship's tour of Normandy that was fantastic. We visited Omaha Beach, Arromanches, the American Cemetery and Bayeux, including the amazing 900 year old Bayeux Tapestry that tells the story of the Norman conquest of England. It was great.
