Baltic cruise/ Aarhus, Denmark

Recommended Posts

After waiting with much anticipation the shore excursions for Aarhus, Denmark are finally available for booking. And none of them are very appealing!!!

Has anyone been to this port of call and if so, do you have any recommendations?? Is the town of Aarhus close enough to the docks where you can get of the ship and walk into to town or is it a taxi ride away?

We walked off the ship into town on our port day in Aarhus. We really enjoyed the Resistance Museum and the Women's Museum which are housed in different parts of the same building. Admission to both was very reasonable. Just across from there is the beautiful Aarhus Cathedral. Aside from the lovely stained glass, organ and other grandeurs, we discovered the most interesting frescos depicting heaven, earth and hell. These are not easily visible so you may have to ask someone if you decide to go. Due to the large number of college students in the city, you will find a few good shops, sidewalk cafes, art museums and interesting graffiti. Enjoy!

It might not be the most exciting city in the world but the people are lovely.

I have been twice and both times without being asked people have come to give me directions when I have looked lost. Some of the history is very interesting, go to the wooden village it is an experience.

I took a city bus to the end of the line to visit the Moesgard Museum - prehistoric - which I found very interesting. After that I rode the bus back and toured the cathedral. Except for the bus, I walked everywhere in town.

You definitely can walk into town. We walked to the wonderful art museum then down by the canal and shopping area. http://www.everytrail.com/guide/aarhus-highlight-tour/map

We had planned to go to the Old Town but were tired so had an easy day of it.

We walked into town and went to the art gallery with the rainbow glass circle on the top. Got some cool coloured photos up there. Then had a beer by the small canal in the main shopping area. There is also a really old church worth seeing in the main area as well.

I do agree though that there are more interesting ports. I'd have rather taken the day and overnighted at any other port.

I'll reply somewhat differently; we took the Princess excursion to Ebeltoft and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's an old town, and a vacation destination for Danes. When we returned to Aarhus, there was still plenty of time to see the Cathedral, walk around town and generally sight-see. If that is offered this year, give it another look.

We were there on a Sunday, and there was NOTHING open in town. Church was going to be open later after services, but we didn't stick around. Did make it easy to get pictures since there were only 20 or 30 people on all the streets. The ship tours did go - those locations were opened for the Princess tours.

The local folks did have a tent set up on the pier with crafts - great glass and art at great prices. They also had a couple of groups singing and dancing on the dock. Very friendly people!

Hi,

we were in Aarhus in July 2013 with EMERALD PRINCESS and it was the far less exciting destination.

The ship will be berthed at the Container terminal and you will be escorted to the city center per shuttle bus.

We just made a city trip for two hours and than we went back t the ship - sadly there is nearly nothing appealing...

Wondering why not all cruises visit Gothenburg (or have a day at sea between oslo and Warnemuende/Berlin)...

I completely disagree to those people who say that Aarhus is boring. I've lived there previously, and there's so much to see - Aarhus was a Viking port so has masses of Viking history (check out the free to enter Viking museum under the high street bank in the same square as the cathedral, also worth a look is Vores Fru Kirke which has the remains of a Viking church underneath it), the cathedral, modern art museum (ARoS), the woman's museum, loads of amazing cafés and restaurants. I could go on and on about it, as frankly it's a beautiful city (the smallest city in the world by the way ;)).

Oh and yes I'm biased but there you go, I've defended Aarhus' honor :D

Oh and yes you can very easily walk into the main town from the port, and yes if docking on a Sunday everything is pretty much closed. Sorry about that, my adopted country hasn't quite made it into the 21st century.

Yes, you can walk into town it is a short walk. There are some beautiful small churches to see. Go to Aarhus Cathedral. It has beautiful ship models hanging inside. Also the Church of our Lady is beautiful. I don't like modern art much so I was not keen to go to the Aarhus Art Museum but it is worth the trip just to go up to the roof and see the views of the town. There is a rainbow colored glass walkway at the top also which is beautiful to see. Also the town has many small shops and places for coffee, etc. We normally like to take organized excursions but not here, it is very easy to do on your own.
